So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
Need ideas for a new game to get formy upcoming birthday, since the way my mom does Bdays is just to tell me to pic something, and she gives me the cash for it.

Anyone have any cRPG's to recomend ? (RPG only pls)

As it is, Im strongly considering Arcanum, as Ive heard much good about it.

Arcanum? YES! Some people dislike the game and say it has a horrible combat engine and that some of the dungeons are horrible, but none of that bothered me at all. Arcanum is VERY close to being my favorite cRPG, FO has it by a hair.

The character creations are endless and amazing. The setting is one of the best next to that of the FO universe. I've played this game almost if not more then FO with tons of different characters and its always fun.

My favorite character would have to be my Half-Ogre Togar Bumpweed who was just a powerhouse and was pretty much unstoppable with the Pyro Axe.

The thief characters are also a blast, because they have dozens of side quests that you can only get by joining the thieves guild.

Amazing game and I would recommend it to anyone!

5/5

Mohrg

Thanks for the review.

Im strongly considering it now.

Heh, I just noticed something. Mohrg

We both have the same registration date, lol.

/me agrees with the clown, Arcanum is a very gooc cRPG.

I reccomend Torment, too. It's a must.

Other than that, System Shock 2, now a freeware game.
It's a FFP game with RPG elements, and it rocks. None of the hordes-slaughtering, invincible ubermensch scenarios of most FFP's.
Paranoia game of the century.

Whats this 'wastelands' game I keep hearing refrences about ? From what pple have said, I assume its a good game, if older than FO.

EDIT

Freeware, you say ? Im there :)

Wasteland is a CRPG from 1987. You could say that Fallout is an unofficial sequel to Wasteland.

Among the newer adventure games* I recommend getting is Star Wars: KoTOR. It's BioWare, but if you have any appreciation of Star Wars at all, you're bound to enjoy it.

*Note that I refrained from calling KoTOR an "RPG".

Well, Wasteland is also freeware these days.

I'd recommend Gothic and Gothic 2 myself, besides what has been previously mentioned (Note: these reviews have what I consider good coverage of these games, both the positives and negatives, that's the basis on which I chose them; you'll want to find your own reviews).

Basically, every game recommended has at least one major flaw. In Gothic and Gothic II, it is the control scheme. In Arcanum there is the terrible combat and dungeon-crawls. For Planescape: Torment, the engine is limiting and the combat system is unenjoyable. On the other hand, all of these games have good points, which overshadow their bad.

You could always refrain from making a choice, and get them all! You wouldn't regret it.

i think the most involving game i played beside FO was gothic...1 and 2
arcanum and torment are great games, but they are somewhat dated(argh like fallout even thu its hard to admit).
anyway the guy b4 me was right you will enjoy anyone u will pick.

btw i am playing beyond divinity which is similar to diablo but alot more RPG driven(and much greater grafix and plot), if u heard about sacred its much better than it-but alot tougher too.

Ah... "Beyond Divinity", the sequel to "Divine Divinity". You're playing something that was developed in the city where I live (yep, it's Belgian, alright). I've read some reviews about it and apparently it is pretty awesome.

@ rikus: how is combat in "Beyond Divinity"? Is it RT like Diablo or can you pause like in Baldur's Gate? I've been meaning to buy the special edition, featuring both DD and BD, because I'm really keen on the graphics (2D is all I need) but I'm afraid I won't like combat one bit.

I concur with the rest of these guys: "Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura" and "Planescape: Torment" are really good games and both are worth purchasing. (I favour Arcanum, though).

>If you want some CRPGs, try:

Arcanum
Planescape: Torment
Geneforge 2
Divine Divinity
Knights of the Old Republic
Gothic 2
Baldur's Gate 2

>If you want some CRPGs which are party-based, dungeon crawl-oriented, but still great, try:

Silent Storm
Temple of Elemental Evil
Wizardry 8
Icewind Dale 2

EDIT: Stupidily, I forgot to mention some games. One has already been mentioned, but here it is anyway.

>If you want some hybrids which have RPG elements, and range from good to great:

System Shock 2
Freedom Force
Deus Ex

(just for reference, SS2 and DX are first person shooters at their core, and FF is an RTS/RPG with superheroes).

Maybe we should move this to another thread but how is KOTOR less of a cRPG than FO?

Well, Ive been to busy with work to get anything yet, but Im proably gona get arcanum.

Where can I DL wastelands if its freeware now ?

On the NMA main page, it's listed under latest files, but the link is dead.

You can get Wasteland at http://www.the-underdogs.org. Make sure you have some kind of pop-up stopper or are using Mozilla before you visit though - they clean out most "installer" pop-ups when they can but better safe than sorry. Get the manual and Paragraphs while you're there, too.

Make sure you have any download accelerators turned off, and check the faq page they link to from the download page. Also bear in mind that their servers take an incredible hit every day - they've got almost every game ever released for the PC until 1995 available for download, so I'm surprised the site hasn't capsized by now.

I could write a 50-page essay on why KoTOR sucks miserably as an RPG and why it's nothing but an adventure game with character attributes (which determine precisely jack) and dungeon crawl, but I'm just too damn lazy to repeat what's been said in a vast number of other discussions. Instead, check out the "Games like Fallout" thread on this forum (should be near the top of the page) and see reasons why Baldur's Gate is a feeble excuse for an RPG, and keep in mind that KoTOR is a considerably more constrained in terms of interactivity and freedom of choice than Baldur's Gate.
