Need some graphics card advice

speedfan allows you to see most stuff (voltlines, fan rpm, all temperatures etc).

That 8800 looks pretty hot. If worse comes to worse and you have to ditch the X1800XT, then I'd go for an 8800.

Make sure you get something with a unified shader model. Until recent, cards had like X number of pixel shaders (for textures) and Y number of vertex shaders (for geometry). With a unified shader model, all the shaders go both ways. That's why the 8800 can give you more bang for your buck.

Hopefully you can keep your X1800XT going until the 2nd gen DX10 cards come out.

Right sorry for the delayed reply. I am yet to do a memtest (keep bloody forgetting), but i have found my voltages.

Everything look okay?

nah, meant voltages on the PSU/motherboard, not the graphics card.

not much we can surmise from the GPU voltages really.

That is an excellent point. From personal experience I can tell you that buying "cutting-edge" cards is not as fun as people make it out to be. You pay a premium for a product that will be replaced with a better one in less than a year. This happened to me when I bought a 6800 GT from BFG. Sure, I got a lifetime warranty with that but do you REALLY expect to use the card more than 3 years? What hurt me the most with this purchase is that fucking Nvidia came up with the 7000 series in less than 2 weeks. So do your research before you buy. And in case someone is considering, SLI and Crossfire suck unless you are playing at resolutions higher than 1280x1024.

True, but the current generation cards will drop in price as soon as the next gen. appears,so even if one doesn't buy one when they come, you'd make a better deal on the current gen. cards as soon as they're released...
So if he manages to get his card running he'll still be in a lot better position than looking for a new card now, when the next gen. shouldn't be too far away.(even if he updates with a current gen. card)

I guess it all comes down to how much money you are willing to commit on your purchases. I do know one thing: I'm not spending $450 on a video card ever again.

I've never done it and I can understand why you wouldn't...but the mid-range -even of the newest- are rarely that expensive.(and I never get it right away either,I wait for a while,so hype of the faster of the gen. starts to come out,it'll drop the price and most driverbugs are usually gone...)
I'd guess on average that I've spent about 2K on my graph cards since I went for the 8500...(since I don't see any need for the high-end in the way I play my games, being fairly low-res...)

Edit:
2K is of course 200...

Well guys, thanks for all the input. Me 8800GTS arrived today, and... It fixed everything :D. I know it was a short sighted gamble, but if you game as much as i do, its seriously necessary to have a decent rig. Well I'm glad everything is stable again, thanks for all the help!

NP at all,too bad you couldn't hold on to your previous -far from bad- card a bit longer, but good to hear it's all been sorted out for you. :)

Yeah, and its a DX10 card so it will save a lot of hassle once Microshaft turns DX10 into a requirement for all new games. Another bit of advice, hold on to your receipts and all the original packing. If you ever need to RMA it, you might need it.
