As for your new "job", MadDog, you might've as well joined local branch of KKK. You are now working for criminals and oppressors who wouldn't mind killing a few million people if it meant an increase of profit for music industry. Nullsoft Waste is supposed to be the safest program around for filesharing, but I think you need a "closed community" for it - like you and twenty people you know that have the password or key can share safely among yourselves instead of a huge network like kazaa. Bittorrent is supposed to be good, but I think it's the same deal as Waste. I don't think there are any "safe" programs on the magnitude of kazaa though.
I've read that the RIAA will only prosecute for allowing others to upload music from your computer, but not for downloading music from others. I don't know how true this is and don't want to find out but its pretty interesting.
I don't know what judges say, but it is legally your right to do whatever you want with something as long as it is for your own personal use. Read copyright guidelines. Giving to others is a no-no, but taking from others is actually ok. how funny is that?
