well the "open-top" ones allways reminded me of the kind they ship fruit and such in. Wich is still used today, and they are also made in a few minutes so they might as well have been made after the nukes...
Generaly they ship smaller things in cardboard boxes wtih styrofoam, bigger wooden boxes are used for larger things and usualy not smaller things unless they need the ruggedness of wooden crates.
They are predominately used in 3rd world countries... now... enough with the wooden box fights
