New Reno *spoilers*

First time out of the vault
I've reached and explored New Reno, and I've met the various families (apart from Bishop who always attacks me on sight). But I'm not sure what to do. Which family should I help, if any? They all seem pretty nasty so should I just kill them all?

I went south and met the kid who was making the Jet, and decided to kill him, along with the slavers, although the slaves are too stupid to go anywhere.

So now I'm just kind of wondering what to do. I was actually on my way south to NCR and called in at New Reno on the way.

Do what you want. Support a family, kill them all, ignore them. New Reno has the most endings(ten) of any place in Fallout 2. So pretty much no matter what you do it is reflected in the endings.

Bishop might be aggressive if you finished some quests for Vault City, I guess. But he's an asshole anyway. I guess the Mordinos would also have no love for you, seeing as you killed their golden hen. Your only choice would seem to be the Salvatores or the Wrights, the Wrights being the least mafia-like of all the families. They don't even approve of drugs, unless I'm mistaken.

You could just kill them all, but then you're missing out on becoming a made man.

The "usual" thing to do is: do all quests for one family, then kill them all. Repeat with the other families except the Wrights.

I decided that i couldn't be bothered doing quests for any of the criminal gangs, so I've killed the Salvatores, and also the Bishops (although it was a challenge getting out of there alive). So I reckon I'll have a crack at the Mordinos next, and then see how it goes with the Wrights, who I might also kill depending on how moral I judge them to be!

I've also only just learned about the ability of switching between corpses when there is a pile of bodies in one place. Really wish I'd noticed that earlier instead of pixel hunting...

I always thought it's more fun to work for them as long as it suits me and then go all Yojimbo/Fistful of Dollars. But you do whatever you feel like doing, it's your game.

Yeah I probably would have done that too normally, but I got to a point where I didn't know what I wanted to do, and it started annoying me to the point of not wanting to carry on playing. But taking on the families in some fun firefights fixed that problem and made it fun again.

Having said that, it turns out the Mordinos are out of my league at the moment, so I've headed down to NCR and Vault 15, and hopefully I'll be be strong enough to take on the Mordinos on my way back north.

There's an optimal procedure (Spoiler warning for reelz, since everyone else here have given you the "explore freely" approach, which IS the best way to go. So, ignore this if you prefer to roll your own way)
Visit the Mordinos first, do their jobs untill they tell you to kill Salvatore. Agree to do it, but wait.
Visit Salvatore, and do their jobs, untill they tell you to fuck off. Kill all of them, report back to Mordinos, then turn down their "made man" offer, and kill all of them.
In Vault City you can find someone with a briefcase to hand out. Take the briefcase, and give it to Mr. Bishop, and do jobs for him. This sets in motion some side-tasks that can grant you huge chunks of XP, not to mention a massive battle with raiders. Go back to mr. Bishop, and kill everyone there after turning down his offer to become "made man".
Lastly, visit the Wrights, and do their jobs. Alternatively, kill them all when you're done, and you have erradicated all significant organized crime of California. That - or accept being made-man of the Wright Family

Pass a pistol to one of Wrights little kiddies...

To assassinate Boss Wright, give the kid a gun and tell him to wave it in his father's face and pull the trigger. You don't get any xp for this, though. You can still get the desert transaction by talking to the kids again. You can prevent the kids from shooting themselves or Orville if you steal the gun back before leaving the map
:V

I actually started getting a bit tired of the game, what with the endless random encounters, having to cheat to beat the raiders in Vault 15 by going in and out of the elevator (otherwise they would have torn me apart), not really knowing what to do or where to go etc, So I'm taking a break from it and I've started playing something completely different (Deadly Premonition on Xbox 360). I'm sure I'll return to it at some point though.
