yesterday evening, I needed to unpack a file from a DAT, and since I was in a great hurry, I decided to use one of the new GUI-whatever super-puper unpackers instead of my favourite f2re. Ok, attempting to do it. Dammit, "Datexplorer: acess violation at address XXXXXXX whatever". Well, ok, let's try fade. Opening DAT... pressing the 'extract button'.. pressing... uh-huh... *PRES-SING*... wait a minute, is it deactivated? It's deactivated!!! Oh shit. Now my last hope is DATMan. "Take it easy, pal, it's final release, after all, it should go without bugs," - I say to myself, while attempting to move the pointer to datman.exe... WHA-??! WHAT THE F!CKING DLL DO YOU NEED?!!!!! OH, YOU LITTLE ^&$*%@@#!^%@$#$*%$$#@#&$&$@@)&*!!!!!!........
I had to use f2re after all. But everything I can say in this situation is that science has surely done a GREAT step forward. %\

What's wrong with most dll's? The only one I know which is bad is advert.dll (used to crash my computer 80% of the time as soon as I opened up IE)

They aren't the VB6 runtimes...

The only way of not having those runtimes is to install the first (and most buggy) version of Win95 (or earlier) or use another OS.

I'm sure that the dll was zlibtool.ocx, well, are you sure you didn't ran "RunMe First!.exe", before using?

Doh! I forgot 4 things... ;)

1. About DatExplorer, I noticed some random crashed after working with it several minutes (like, extracting one file, go to another program, come back in 5 minutes, extract a MVE, do other things then come back, etc. etc.)
I use it when I just need to extract a file which I know where it is (DatMan has searching capabilities, DE not) and is relatively small.

2. FADE always worked perfectly for me! I can assure that if FADE would had decompressing capabilities (not only extracting), DatMan would not exist ;-). It's incredibly fast and easy to manipulate. It's a pity that Serge lost its source codes.

3. I don't like console programs too much, I never used f2re that much, although it's a good program.

4. LOL!!!!!!!! :D

I started using a computer when I was 5 years old with the Commodore 64 C (what a hell of computer!!), until year 96/97 I always used non-Graphical User Interfaces.

So... Things evolute, things evolute so they are made easier and faster, so, if they're easier to manipulate, we can create more complex things, and when we make these complex things even easier, when can create even more super-puper ;-) complex things.

The GUI wasn't only made to facilitate things to people who can't understand computers, but they were made for the people which understands them to encourage them to create more cool things.

And what about the next step? The 3D GUI! The monitor is a cube with 6 panels where you can place your programs just by grabbing them with your hand and place them wherever you want, no more mouses, use your hand to touch the 6 screen panels to execute programs or operate the computer, and other stuff to make more efficient the way you operate a computer.

So, when the 3D GUI cames out, why would you want to use common GUI programs? Or even console programs??
If people doesn't adapt to global evolution, they trend to stop making stuff useful for humanity.

RE: Doh! I forgot 4 things... ;)

I still have my C64 in a cupboard and surprisingly it still works :) You could get GUI's for the 64 GEOS I think it was called it was a development late in the c64s lifetime and not very popular.

I think I'll stick with 2d GUI's programming 3D will be a major headache.

Yeah, it was GEOS, I had it, surprisingly it never crashed!
I don't remember how, but I managed to completely annihilate the first disk of it (not the disk, but the data inside it)... I thought my dad was gonna kill me and then I started to cry......
Hey! Don't look at me that way! I was 6 or 7 years old when that happened!

Hell, I've got a better solution, get a big hard drive and extrac the contents of the entire Master.DAT to your hard drive. That's what I did.

Anybody use ESC.exe for FRM viewing? It works great, probably the best FRM viewer/extracter out there.

I've made a FRM displayer that works with multiframe FRMs, etc. I was thinking of allowing FRM use for other game libraries.. Anybody want it or to see it?

Yeah, and this complex things become really huge in size. (live example: VB libraries) Also, today people start from super-puper easy-to-manuipulate things, and, as a result, they actually know sh!t about how it all works. That limits their capabilities to the capabilities of super-puper easy-to-manipulate things they use. I have mentioned 3 most well-known and obvious arguments here. Let's see what do you have against them.

I did that too, but not many people with 20 or so 600-2000mb games can do that.

Nope, I've never even heard of it. Can you tell us more?

Yeah, I did that some months ago, but since I only have 7gb and it's full of VB libraries ;-), so I can't spent 1gb on Master.dat and I deleted everything...

Another live example: Human's brain is bigger than monkey's brain because our brain is more complex (ie. Human evolution).

If you prefer a simple mind because it's smaller, it's your path. Good luck!

(Note: They aren't actually monkeys, I don't know how to say it in english, but the spanish word is: Primate.)

BTW, VB dll: 1.3mb, VC++ dll: 980kb, I don't see a big difference between them...
And VB's executable files are like 400% smaller than C++ programs and even 800% smaller than Delphi programs.
And finally, you just have to be a very rare guy to don't have them installed in your computer...

>people start from super-puper easy-to-manuipulate

People selects what they want to know. If someone doesn't know how his car works, it's because he's not interested on getting that information.

A computer can be used in two general ways:
1. As a tool. For those people who just wants to use programs to help improving his work/job.
2. As an I-don't-know-how-to-say-this. For those who wants to develop even more powerful programs, computer, computer's components, etc.

Why an accountant would need to know how to "manually" read the .MDB Access file format?
And what do you think? He would prefer pen and paper or a computer's GUI to make his calculations?

Computers are here to help humanity to live a better life not to complicate it.

I just noticed 2... Oh, this stupid brain of mine... *hits his brain with a mace*, Ouch!

Well you have to make sure you delete all the MVE movies because they're pretty much worthless and take up a lot of space. Also remember to use FAT32 on your hard drive or those little files will eat your hard drive alive.

It only takes about 400 megs on my system, and that's with every ACM sound file converted into a WAV file too.

I found it at www.fallout.ru (I don't know if they still have it), but it can show multiframe FRMs, export them (all frames), and even play it fast in a slide-show.

Here's the caption (in Russian) from the about button:

Do you use the Allegro graphics library for DJGPP?

Anyway, a compiled version can be found at http://www.poseidonet.f2s.com/files/frmshow.zip

I'm still working out the positioning setup, but it does show the 6-frame character poses. I can't remember if it shows long frame sequences like Frank Horrigan's death correctly.. I think it does..
