Well, that's an example of a proportional increasment. The qualitative improvement of some programs (like ms office and VB as well) has stopped several versions ago, and the process of quantitative improvement has started.

I do not know that. Has to be checked.

Seems like you've ran out of arguments if you are using this one. We're discussing the quality of VB, not it's popularity. Declined.

I don't have anything against that, but would you prefer to live in an educated society or or to be surrounded by ignorance and backwardness?

That depends on the GUI. Some GUI's can be inconvenient enough to force people use pnp instead of them

So you think that most people should just use the goods of civilisation without wondering about how it works etc? Then I refer you to "Orphans of the sky" by Robert Heinlein

RE: Doh! I forgot 4 things... ;)

Are you guys sure that visual C++ exes need a dll? I know that in Borland you can make apps which need only standard windows dlls. The map app I'm working on is 400K and should run with 0 dll hassles.

It's because Borland has the option to bind Borland's Dlls into the exe (like Delphi, Turbo C++, QuickC++, QuickBasic, etc.).

Crazy, do you remember when you sent me the alpha of your program? Its size was 20kb and when I tried to run it was requesting me for "borlandl.dll" file.

Then you attached the dlls into the file and its size increased to +400kb.

And I forgot... If you're creating Win32 applications using the MFCs (Microsoft Foundation Classes), it needs the runtimes which weights almost 1mb.

Wrong.

Office 2000 has a lot more options than its predecessor plus it's 900 times faster and it never crashed.

VB 6 dll only increased ~300kb from version 3, its code is as fast as C++ programs and it's impressively more powerfull.
VB 7 incorporates the last 3 basic OOP routines to be a 100% OOP language program and incorporates lotsa more functions (just readed some public-tester's articles about it).

Visual Basic isn't RAD anymore. Visual Basic is a true powerfull OOP program language. VB is not a newbies toy.

That is what I said, I don't know the spanish-english traduction of "primates".

Humans decents from the primates, yes.

No no, ignorant people discuss about VB runtimes because "they are big", and what the heck do you care how big they're if they're installed with Windows??! (of course, we're talking about a 1mb file, not a 400mb file!)

Neither. I don't know a shit about marketing and I know a lot about programming, but that doesn't mean that neither him or I will be an ignorant.

Okay okay... I don't know A LOT about programming, but yes a little ;-)

pnp? Plug 'n Play? Umm... Excuse my ignorance, but, what are you talking about when you say "pnp"?

BTW, if you refer pnp to console programs, that is completely off-topic: If the GUI is horrible and the console version, too?? And what about if the pen is ugly and the paper is wrinkled???????? Oh my God!! Nooooooo!!!! :-)

RE: Doh! I forgot 4 things... ;)

Hell, why are you people arguing over file sizes? The fact is that Microsoft has produced such a piece-of-shit operating system that requires such bloat-ware. No matter *what* compiler you use, if it's made for Win32 it is going to be huge.

As George Foot put it:

"Anyone who is concerned about the ratio between library and program code should just get to work and write more program code to catch up."

RE: Doh! I forgot 4 things... ;)

If I wasn't so lazy and coded in the raw win32 api my apps would be <50K and not need any dlls. Only problem is it would take too long to get anything going.

I agree with you about windows though. What happened to the lovely size of workbench on the amiga <100K RAM used for the OS that was nice.

That's what I'm talking about! Taking Word as example, even Word6 had A LOT more options than a normal user could ever need!

This improvement should be done with a patch, not with a newer version of a program. Oh c'mon! Stop excusing Microsoft's money thirst!

>VB 6 dll only increased ~300kb

VB is more powerful than CPP?? Man, you should not work at night. Look's like you're getting crazy.

Don't trust everything you read.

Loosing the status of a newbies toy, it has lost the most important of it's advantages.

>Humans decents from the primates, yes.
Not only descend from them, but belong to them, too.

If all of them were installed with windows, we weren't arguing about this now. Just scan through my thread message again.
Also, the coincidence that VB was created by MS, which also created the most popular operating system, doesn't say anything about the advantages or disadvantages of VB. Declined.

>pnp? Plug 'n Play? Umm... Excuse

Mind the context, pal, mind the context.

Of course not, but you should have basic learnings about planes. If you do not, that DOES mean ignorance. And ignorance is dangerous. Just read the book.

RE: Doh! I forgot 4 things... ;)

I cutted all the above conversation because it was completely off-topic, I pasted it on the General Discussion Forum on the thread named "Dr. W95, over here!"

We're discussing about Graphic User Interfaces, Console programs, not about VB, dlls or Microsoft.

Oh, yes, how stupid I'm. But I should make the same reply than above here:

<sarcasm>
If the GUI is horrible and the console version, too?? And what about if the pen is ugly and the paper is wrinkled???????? Oh my God!! Nooooooo!!!!
</sarcasm>

OF COURSE IT DEPENDS! But GUI brings you a lot more flexibility and developing possibilities than console programs, THAT IS A FACT!!!
