NMA's Opinion On Vehicles

About vehicles I definitely think there should be some, if in Fallout 2 we have a working Highwayman and a mechanic that knows how to restore pre-war cars with the right tools, parts and financial incentive. I don't see why there shouldn't be more people who know how to repair vehicles, Fallout Tactics (although Semi-Canon) also has working vehicles (and it would make sense that the BoS would collect vehicles and restore them, after all those are also technology and the BoS has plenty of records and manuals and plenty of scribes that learn all kinds of tech and repair skills and all of that stuff).

The thing that would make it limited is the fact that most pre-war vehicles run on fossil fuels that are pretty much depleted (Anchorage is one of the last oil deposits in the world). But now all of these factions use vertibirds (Enclave, NCR, BoS), the Boomers could restore a bomber and fuel it with bio-fuel made from corn, The Shi think they can make and fuel a spaceship in a few years after Fallout 2, Mr House also believes he can do that with time. So I don't see the fuel being a problem anymore.

Imagine the whole point of a Fallout game where some new faction was invading the wasteland and their biggest trump card was pre-war military vehicles that were altered to run on bio-fuel and/or electricity. During the past they would have been collecting vehicles and studying ways to make them work again, training drivers and soldiers, building a large stock of fuel and generators, etc. After decades they finally got enough operational vehicles and manpower to start taking on the wasteland.

Most of the pre-war helicopters and planes were grounded because of not having enough fuel (this is canon), most heavy military vehicles like Tanks and armored troop transports suffered the same fate, now imagine that some people found a huge underground depot full of those grounded vehicles with their assembly plans, plans on how to refit them to be able to use different sources of fuel (which IIRC is canon that military scientists were starting to study on how to do that before the bombs fell), training and usage manuals, etc.
To get an idea, these are pictures of WWII vehicle boneyards (imagine something like this but underground, because they weren't supposed to be abandoned, they were supposed to be refitted to be operational and on the war front again by the USA):

I wouldn't mind getting a Witcher type deal where there's a few separate but large maps, but to get to each of them, we have to travel via car.

That way you get to pace yourself and get a huge ass map at the same time.

There are a lot of fuel options. Later cars in Fallout appear to be electric, and quite a few of those should still be around. And electric motors are somewhat easy to produce as soon as you have some basic industry. Salvaging copper wire, wee.
Anyway, the superior energy storage technology of Fallout makes electric cars the way to go. I guess the main reason we didn't get many working vehicles so far was gameplay and balancing, lore isn't a problem in my opinion.
As for internal combustion engines, there are other fuel options. Like wood gas generators, or biofuels like methane or ethanol.

I agree with what you say in principle. In fact, I always suppose there should be some "Nordic tribes" similar to Mongolians or Gypsies , have lots of brahmin,, cars run by brahmin shit, and wandering around the great plains for loots.

But a fallout with too many cars may looks like mad max or post nuclear GTA too much.

However, just like how much Ford T were being utilized as anything other than a car, I would say, if any fallout survivor get access to a working car, it is highly possible that they will just cannibalize it. The engine (and alternator) would be extremely popular as generators or power tools. Light, seats and air con for obvious purpose. And the rubber tires, would very likely use as fuel.

And after 200 years, most easily accessible cars should have been gone.

Cannibalizing cars already happened by the caravans, which (at least in Fallout 1/2) often used carts made from car trunks.

Isn't this exactly how most people imagined Fallout back in the days? Mad Max, the road warrior, etc.
It certainly borrows a lot from Mad Max. To me, Fallout is the decay and apocalypse from Mad Max and Road Warrior happening to the World Of Tomorrow of The Jetsons.

B-Baka!

The only thing missing are still the hovercars... we are doomed to never have hovercars, not even the Fallout universe had them...

No. At least I never got that. The leather armour is a clear homage to road warrior as is dogmeat's breed. (Don't remember where the took the name dogmeat from tho') however beyond that fallout had a much different vibe than the mad max movies.

I do think that ultimately should cars be included it should definitely mostly be a show of power. And really shouldn't come into play via actual gameplay.

Fallout is a mishmash of Madmax and wasteland 1 IIRC.

Honestly, Fallout takes from so many damned things it's kinda amazing they managed to not get a lawsuit.

I mean, there's godzilla in it, dr who, mad max...

Not a fan unless the vehicle actually serves a purpose other than just being transportation. Mad Max had pretty interesting gameplay and mechanics. I want it to be fleshed out rather than a situation where you're pretty much the only guy with a working car and everyone else is just slogging around.

Like, it wouldn't have to be combative based either. You could have situations where there's a big gate and you can't climb over it, and you can't blow it up because you don't have any explosives. So, you hook up a tow cable to it and just force the thing open.

Well, actually, in the FO3 DLC, the Operation Anchorage does have hover tanks and of coz, those droids in Mothership Zeta. And, just like my airship thingies, "hovercar" can somewhat get away from the "bumpy drive" issue that is a real pain in the A$$ for FNV car mods..................................

BTW, even if there is a pre-war ford assembly plant still intact. Complex machinery like car(s) relies so much parts and tools from 3rd party suppliers/factories, it is practically impossible to build without. So, even if post war survivors "reverse engineered" the tech to build a car, I would say it is more likely they would create a new type/model base on the materials they got, rather paying extra efforts to rebuild a post war model.

Just like many European civilization went real backwards after the collapse of Roman Empire. But once they back on their feet, they ended up creating new stuff rather than back to Roman times.

Well, given that the world of Fallout had over 200 years of recovery time it's a wonder the world isn't more or less built up yet.
But basic self-powered vehicles of some sort should be around at least. They have the technology to produce new energy weapons (Gunrunners) and all sorts of stuff, so it shouldn't be too hard to build a simple cart with an electric motor and a few microfusion cells.

Don't remember where the took the name dogmeat from tho'.

In the movie A Boy And His Dog, the protagonist refers to his dog, Blood, as "Dogmeat" when yelling at him in a part of the movie. Pretty good film, but the first half is definitely better than the second.

See had I though it was from a boy and his dog but then I though, naw dog's name was blood.

Didn't some faction in New Vegas figure out how to use railcars or something like that? I'm not talking about the NCR Monorail. I could've sworn I heard something about that.

They're modified mining rigs and it's implied their existence was fabricated by General Chase. /nerdmoment

The NCR was building railway lines, using the Powder Gangers as slave labour before they rebelled.
