Noobish question about RPG's

Hi, I've been trying to find this one for years now. But how do RPG's on forum boards work. I mean it seems like a great idea, make your own character and stuff, but how does it all work out? Can someone help me here?

See? There's a storyline right there. You RP as a character, go on common goal or crisis.
