Nucler winter anyone?

Has anyone got opinions on setting FO3 to take BEFORE FO1? I mean would it be cool to roam a frozen wasteland in the late stages of nuclear winter when the dust begins to settle? Just an suggestion...

I don't think there's any nuclear winter in the fallout world.

Oh really? In 2130, the Bible clearly states, the Great Winter occurs.

I don't think setting it too far before Fallout 1 is a good idea or even really possible, because really if it's possible to run around and do quests and save the world during a nuclear winter, even the end stages, it kind of negates the whole "apocalypse/complete collapse of civilization" aspect of the game world.

Fallout 2 intro suggests the nuclear holocaust was followed by a "quiet darkness" which lasted "many years".

If you ask me, though, Fallout 2 intro is full of shit. Nuclear winter wasn't discovered until the 1980s. Hence, there was no concept of nuclear winter in '50s fiction, which means nuclear winter doesn't belong in the Fallout setting.

Edit: I retract my previous statement

Is there a consistent 50s SciFi view of how weather would be affected by nuclear war? I'm not familliar with much 50s post-apocalypse fiction but if there isn't anything written about the meteorological impact of a nuclear war then I don't see a conflict with 50s fiction.
I do agree with Montez, however, that it would be hard to portray the "complete collapse of civilization" if civilization is already rebuilding shortly after the war. Also, there is a slight conflict with the Wild West feel of fallout.

I also agree with Montez, as there wouldnt be much other than a tumbleweed colony to explore. Also who would be out and about at such a time? I dont completely agree with Ratty, in that several things in the Fallout games themselves dont agree with 50s fiction and that the Fallout 2 intro is crap.

Interesting suggestion though.

I dunno there could be quests, like the boulder is looking at the canyon's wife funny, and stuff like that, really, whilst it would make a nice hike simulator, and prove people wrong that there was no use for Outdoorsman, that's a really dumb idea.

Just a thought, but if there was a nuclear winter to occur in a future Fallout game, wouldn't it have to be set fairly far in the future, as the world in Fallout 2 was quite the opposite?

I understand that after a nuclear blast, the fallout and whatnot heats the earth, then cools it, heats and cools blah blah blah... And with each repetition, the cycle becomes shorter and shorter, till eventually the fluctuations become minor.

Which brings upon the debate of the time that Fallout 3 will be set, according to the date of Fallout 1/2.

If the game was set too far into the future, the technology may have changed, and hence society, thus leaving a gap where the player does not understand what has happened since the last Fallout, depending on whether the game IS based on the previous Fallouts.

Anywho, the nuclear winter may be a different approach to the Fallout genre, but definetly would not fit in.

The idea in discussion is placing FO3 pre FO1. Seems a silly idea to me, but it should answer your time scale question.

Well yes that is reasonable, but definetly not feasible. I really don't like the ideal of a prequel.

The nuclear winter would be an interesting aspect of Fallout, but as previous;y stated, it is an idea from the 80's nuclear scares.

I don't find it feasible either, you however seemed to believe that the discussion was for Nuclear Winter set after 2. I mentioned that this was a prequel discussion.

My apologies, I read the topic a while ago and just came back into the discussion without rereading the topic.

No probs, hell even I've been known to be wrong, on occasion.
Who'd of thought?? [\sarcasm]

And it wasn't a case of being wrong, it was just a misunderstanding on my part, but what the hell does it matter eh?
