Only In Ameri.....The Netherlands?

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The name of the Lord may no longer be taken in vain in the Dutch village of Staphorst.

Staphorst, in the so-called Dutch "bible belt" of eastern towns where religion holds sway, approved a ban on swearing by 13-4 council votes.

But the caveat that swearing is not banned when it is an expression of the constitutional freedom of speech may make it difficult to punish offenders.

"A ban on swearing can be seen as a signal," the council's proposal said, adding a change in moral values was needed to address the underlying problem.

Past swearing bans in bible-belt villages were declared in violation of the right to free expression in 1986. One other town has such a ban -- Reimerswaal, in the southwestern province of Zeeland.

The Dutch association against swearing, which runs national billboard campaigns to admonish the bad-mouthed Dutch, says the Bible outlaws swearing.

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain," it quotes Exodus 20:7.

Legal marajuana, legal prostitution, Turkish whores everywhere, AND punishments against blasphemous unbelievers? Fuck this, I'm moving to The Netherlands.

Doesnt "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain..." mean you shouldnt speak the name of God in a bad way? As in not using bad words in reference or saying bad names of the Lord?

In this case how is cussing illegal if its not meant towards God?

Sincerely,

TVD, you heretic...
God is always listening and is always there, so whenever you utter the word of curse he hears you and is insulted...

SHITTY, SHITTY FAG, FAG, SHITTY, SHITTY FAG, FAG

Ehehe. There's only one thing missing, though: they can't punish anyone for it, because that's what was declared unconstitutional in 1986 (at least according to the shitty newspaper I read this morning), and not the bans themselves.

Meh, there are some small extremely religious villages like this spread throughout the Netherlands, but they are local phenomena, they are absolutely not reperesentative for the rest of the Netherlands.

Not representative of the modern Netherlands I should think. And as it once was so shall it be again...

There's nothing more enthralling than debating over the minute subtilities of elemental cretinisms to try to prove a point. Mind you, ladies and gentlemen, the point at hand might be as imbecillic as the example used.

ex:

a) USA>YUROP!!1

b) EUROPE>USA!1

Jesus Fucking Christ. I'm sick and tired of this endless, childish bickering, of unshakable dogmatic absolutes and similar politcal pseudo-knowledge. And of morons banning books, records or movies "because they make fun of Santa Claus".

So which minorities do you think they'll do away with first? The Muslims...or maybe the Jews since I'm sure their very disappointed Hitler failed. Oh, oh! Maybe they'll go for those heretic moderate Christians that refuse to join them in their fervor to spill blood and thus proclaim their faith in God...

Really CCR what do you think?

Sincerely,

Yeah well, I wouldn't expect a Russian to understand this.

Funny but we thought the same thing of the crazy religious right fundamentalist evengelicals in the US. Then that bunch were shown to be a bunch of frauds and shams and most of the rational folks breathed a sigh of relief. A bit prematurely as it turned out.

No we got them crawling out of the woodwork. The rise of fundamentalism and Christian fervor illustrates the great willingness of people to substitute the faith in the supernatural for the difficult work of logic and science, suggesting the decay and collapse of human society. First, control speech, then control minds, then begin the repression, first the heretics, the muslims, the jews, the witches.... (and so the rivers will run red with blood as those who fail to understand will be taken to the wall and slaughtered like sheep).

Or so it was written by the the Mad Arab on the 434th page of the Necronimicon that Yog-Sothoth's time would soon be at hand.

Yes, but these villages have existed for centuries. Remember that the Netherlands turned away from religion since the 50s, but before we were very religious. So some 50 years ago this village would have been a bit representative of the Netherlands, but nowadays absolutely not. This can also be seen by the fact that the ruling party in that village is the SGP, which has 2 out of the 150 seats in parliament. A vast minority.

I remember reading an article a while back which compared the fundamentalist christian movements in the Netherlands and in the US. What it said basically was that if SGP and Christenunie (other small christian party) would merge with the CDA (christian democrats and proprietor of the lovely JP Balkenende) they would be able to influence policy in the CDA much like the Religious Right has in the Republican party.

I must say all this seemed/seems pretty unlikely to me because the SGP et al look hardly as nefariously evil as the Religious Right. Inbreeding has made them quite harmless you see. But you never know.

Go back to reading Bertrand Russell. This is tripe and I don't doubt that you know it.

Is it not unlikely, however, that there could be a backlash to this rash of logic and enlightenment that the Niederlands are embracing? People often find a hole in their lives that needs to be filled. If you have Christian parents, that hole is your vagina. If you have "enlightened" parents, that hole is Christianity.

Not indicative of everybody, of course, but I'm sure it'll happen.
