Paperdoll/Armor Slots in Fo3

Kain

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Hi! I was wondering if Fallout was going to have an Ultima Online/Anarchy Online style of paperdoll (where you drag & drop your armor pieces) a.k.a. piecemeal system or if it was going to be regular Fo1, 2, and Ts style of one place to put it.

Maybe it could have Head, Body, and Back. For example you put a gasmask on Head or Mirrored Shades, then you put leather armor on Body, and lets say a backpack on Back. Or you could put a gasmask on head, a combat armor on body, and a backpack on Back.

Now If you were using power armor or APA (adv. pow. armor) the head slot would be filled with the PA or APA helmet and cant be taken off, or just grayed out, and in the Back slot you could put an ammo belt or oxygen tank for those long hours underwater (if any) or in toxic areas like the toxic caves in Klamath (you shoulda been suffocating in there.) Also you could put an ammo pack ,instead of oxygen canister, when you are using a minigun to hold a lot more ammo. Eg. Ammo Pack = 2x the ammo with 1/2 the weight.

Another idea would be that you could hold another gun in there, like an AK or an Assault Rifle, FN-FAL, or any big gun. Like a Bozar, carry it with the strap or something. you could also wear a cape if you desired.

the 3 slot system would work better than a head/body or a piecemeal, that way the player dosn't have to go hunting for armor pieces, and get an extra slot where to carry weapons.

Because in Fo Slot 1 and Slot 2 stood for your hands... so how could you carry a rocket launcher and a minigun in each hand, now if you had the back slot, you could cycle between minigun/rocket launcher. Since big guns take up both hands you couldnt have something else in the other slot and it would have to be grayed out or the graphic for the weapon would take up the 2 slots. (like when out of inventory mode, its really big, but in the inventory is small unless you pick it up)

Thanks!

They are already doing that. There are already "Head" and "Body" slots fot Fo3. Also, the seperate item slots imply that you are currently using the item in the current slot, and have holstered/packed away the other item in the inactive slot.

No kidding. I once was talking to my cousin while we driving to lunch about my idea of placing a fan into a monitor to prevent it from heating up (I've got a 20 inch behemoth monitor and I no longer need a heater during the winters). A week later, BAM, I go to a computer show and see one on display. Either some one overheard my idea as he was driving to work or a company was already researching and developing said idea (but I prefer to believe in the former).

Anywho, JE has said that Power Armor should come with both suit and helmet since you see some Brotherhood men simply wearing blue hoods and forsaking the helm. I haven't heard confirmation on things like slots for bracers or boots or capes, etc. Personally, I hope it doesn't become Baldur's Gate where there's only two slots for rings (I've got *TEN* fingers, dammit!) nor do I hope it'll be so micromanaging as Morrowind's paper doll (ahem, Right Steel Gauntlet goes on right hand Left Steel Gauntlet goes on left hand).

Don't forget Wizardy or Ultima Online... you can wear ring, bracelet, necklace, gorget, helmet, cap, sash, belt, apron, tunic, platemail, platemail legs, sword, shield, gloves, socks, boots, cape, and wand.

I'd like a posibility to wear a lot of things on others.... Like you could first put on a shirt made of hardened leather straps and then a leather jacket. Or wear a metal armor and have a (boncho? bonzo? what is it called? that kind of things that the hero wears in the Fistfull of Dollars movie?). This kind of system has been used in a RPG called Siege of Avalon. It would let you configure your personal apearance more.

Girly RPGs

You realize we are playing Fallout not a the FALL clothing line is OUT...

The need to keep it simple. I love that aspect of Fallout and hate it in just about every other game that does the piecemeal.

I'd rather they make each style of body armor graphically unique. Have the Tesla armor surge with lightning, or make the chest box of the power armor flsh like darth vaders little thingy, or hell just make the mark 2 armor more shiny and new lookign that the mark 1 versions...

 Buy one of those big dress up Gi Joes and stick him in the micro wave for 10 seconds if you want to play Fallout dressup...
You could even make Harold the Ghoul and stick a Hi-Ho Cherry-O gamepiece in his head.

The piecemetal idea was scrapped I believe, except for body and head. More slots seem fairly pointless anyway.

well... back could allow you to get a shoulderstrap for your weapon and give you a small boost in small arms that dosn't count towards perks.

That seems like a strained assessment, Kain. A shoulder-holster or sling doesn't make me shoot better. It might let me draw faster but it shouldn't have an accuracy modifier.

I think some people were thinking that some of these items for piecemeal setup would grant, for some reason, magical modifiers a la Diablo or Baldur's Gate style. Like the reasoning that studded gloves for your hands should add +1 melee damage or steel-toed boots would grant extra damage on kicks. Or a cape should either help you fly (Superman) and golden bracers should allow you to deflect bullets (Wonderwoman). To a certain degree, gloves filled with leadshot knuckles should add an extra kick in a fight but then we'd see numerous items with pointless modifiers (recalling BG's Longsword +1 and then Longsword +2!).

Frankly, a head and body slot avoids that pitfall.

Yeah, I guess Body Head, and Items 1 + 2 are enough slots for the game without making it lose its fallout feeling.
