PC Problem, need help

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs

I have an odd problem. My pc works perfectly fine under all normal applications, and can play a game like Diablo 2 just fine. I ran 3dmark, and it went through every test correctly. I have a 3rd fan on the side of my pc, and when I plugged it into the power supply and ran 3dmark, it crashed the pc. I plugged it into the motherboard, and the same problem happened. When I unplugged it, it worked fine, but since I just thought it was rare, I plugged it back in and left it.

Now, I started playing Jedi Outcast. Ends up, at random times playing the game, maybe about 5 minutes in, the PC kicks out like it did for 3dmark. I haven't tried unplugging the fan. Now, my PC isn't running hot, because MBM and the BIOS say that it hasnt gotten passed 56 C. So why exactly does a fan kick off my PC when running 3d games?

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
Asus N7v8x-3 deluxe Nvidia NForce 2 Mobo
1 gig ram
powercolor radeon 9600 XT 256MB graphics card
Audigy 1 MP3+
2 rear fans, + 1 side fan

Get a better power supply, a lot of instability problems and others can be fixed by just getting a new power supply. Get an Antec, Enermax, Sparkle, or Vantec power supply. For your system preferably 400 watts or more.

Exactly what I thought, your powersupply must be insufficient.

420 watt power supply. Its only hooked up to 2 HD, Mobo, dvd burner, and all the little extras. but its powerful enough.

Watts isn't all there is to power supplies, you also have to know if your power supply puts out enough amps, as well as stable voltages.

i dont wanna rain on your parade, but the numbers mean shit. a faulty voltage rail is enough to crash your pc under load. doesnt matter how powerful it says it is.

now i'm not suggesting you go run off to a store and buy a newone. try and borrow one from a friend. your pc has more than enough with a 360W powersupply (take my word for it).

the PSU being bad is the most obvious option. it could be anything really, but anyhow, i've encountered a very strange thing not so long ago that also might be it: is that fan that you think is causing it temperature controlled? i had spend hours searching for a problem on a friends pc and it turned out a temperature controlled fan was giving a feedback, creating a spike that caused the pc to shut down each time. (this should be EXTREMELY rare, but you might wanna look into it)

The fan that came with it was temp controlled. The 2 in the back are temp controlled, but seem to work perfectly (since 3dmark runs with them.). this new fan is running on the mobo, so the mobo tells it how fast to run. Mind you, I only have a problem with the 3rd fan, the one that came with the pc, and the one that i bought to replace it. And it has the problem whether its directly into the power supply, or whether is hooked into the mobo.

If this is just a rare wierd problem, I'll disconnect the 3rd fan and not run it.

WHOO HOO!!! I turned off the fan, and started playing Jedi Outcast. I it happened again, but this time windows restarted itself. when I came back, they gave me the error that it was my radeon 9600 card. I'm going to update the drivers first, and if that doesnt work, I plan on just buying a new card. Something not 3rd party.

I had the exact same problem with the game, it ended up costing me a motherboard because i didnt clue in quickly enough that it was heating right up so i just kept trying to play it and i cooked my mobo. Turns out for some reason it was spiking my CPU temp to like 80.

New mobo, chainsaw-loud Volcano 12! fan problem solved.

euhm... 80°c ?

well done smartass...

btw volcano 12 is a very bad choice lol

My mobo doesn't go past 55. I know that one. Well, I found out that this has nothing to do with my fans. Ends up my powercolor radeon 9600 is the culprit.

ATi's newest drivers and cards seem to have problems with certain games. I've tried all the fixes, but nothing works to remedy the situation. I changed the volts on the agp, turned off fastwrite, upgraded my bios, ran memtest and prime 95, turned agp from 8x to 4x, ran lower graphics standings... all still make a crash. I even went back to 3.1 and 3.2 drivers. That worked for some.

I downloaded and ran the Far Cry demo. Everything works flawlessly. Tonight I'm going to turn on AA and see if that affests anything. I think its how certain games run. ATi's demos also don't crash my game. I ran Aquamark several times, and it didn't crash, but when I was in the options menu, it did. Seems Direct X type graphics run perfectly fine, but there's something else involved that breaks it. Strange! It's a mystery that ATi can't solve, either.

For some reason that game hat a problem with my GPU, I guess it doesn’t like Radeon mobility cards.

What are really good fans? Someone suggested the ZALMAN CNPS7000A-Cu but it is ridiculously expensive.

depends on what the criteria are:

do you want performant cooling? silent cooling? cheap cooling? ...

This is why I'll never buy an ATI card. I've read about so many problems people have with their drivers that no matter what hardware superiority they claim to have it'll they'll never be worth the hassle for me.
