Phantom Pain AND Ground Zeroes are Metal Gear Solid 5

If by "James Bond" kind of way you mean "James Bond mixed with Zardoz mixed with japanese anime and some acid" then yeah. I love the series and its silliness, but even at its best the stories are so hopelessly convoluted that you're either in for the crazy cheesy fun or you're 11 years old and genuinely don't know better.

I love the series and the characters, and I'd agree with all of that, but I do think there's a sincere nuclear non-profileration message. At least there was one.

Metal Gear is essentially an anti-war/anti-nuke video game series made by a hippie with a chunk of the series having some anti-Americanism. I'm fairly certain anything that made the series' storyline good left with Tomokazu Fukushima, who co-wrote the first 3 games, as well as Ghost Babel, and then dropped from the face of the Earth.

But yes, the games can get pretty crazy. Imo the only one that can be said to be heavily influenced by James Bond is MGS3. I don't think the same can be said about the rest, or at least, not as strongly.

I've made a mental note of one day buying a PS3 with Demon's souls, Red Dead Redemption, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and of course, the Metal Gear Legacy Collection.

Oh, don't get me wrong, Kojima writes a ton of silly shit but he's really serious about his messages, but going in solely for that will probably turn off someone really quickly. Take The Phantom Pain for example: he's made it very clear that the game is about revenge and people going mad, but it's also a game about fultoning sheep to your off-shore base, getting cutting-edge cardboxes dropped to your location to better infiltrate a soviet camp in Afghanistan and flying flaming whales. And I welcome that, by the way, because I don't have much confidence in a straight grimdark storyline from that man (though I recognize he's a masterful troll and generally smarter than he's given credit for).

I was surprised to see Kojima using a translator during E3. Might explain why the writing in Metal Gear Solid is so horrible at times: What sounds and looks good in Japan doesn't translate well overseas.

My personal favourite:

"This is Operation Snake Eater."
"THAT'S BECAUSE I'M GOING AFTER COBRA UNIT RITE, HUR HUR, I SO SMART?"

"I've got an idea. . how about we make some nice, realistic designs for the equipment the characters wear. Also give that guy a hologram phone."

I know, this is standard affair for the metal gear series. But this shit can drive me up the wall. Not enough realistic aesthetics in games nowadays, hate to see it done almost right.

I watched an LP of Peace Walker... I liked the design on everything, though it's possibly the most schizotech game in the series. It's 1974, so let's have 21st century style drones with sophisticated onboard AI!
