Anyone playing?

I spent some time with it yesterday and was drawn in at once. It's so much smoother than the first one, the camera follows you with grace and the animations are so much better. Also the graphics are super crisp and hi-def. The new travel system with free movement on the world map, like in Fallout, is also a big improvment.

However, it remains to be seen how good the quests and the writing are. But I believe I'm going to have a lot of fun with this!

How well does the game run? How does the performance compare to the first game?

Since Tyranny was running in 4k on my RX 560 pretty well, i thought this would too.... Upon the first gameplay minute had to scale down to 2k with hard 30fps limit to make it somewhat smooth. A bit disappointed about that, but at least it has improved the graphics, particularly models and lighting effects, more than i expected. Some of the lighting effects in the caves are really nice to look at.

Most relevant information now has a floating wiki when you put your mouse over it, so you don't need to open the in game wiki or the browser to find what the fucking word even means anymore. There are many player friendly pop ups (with smooth transitions for auto opening and auto hiding) that help new players get accustomed to the game. It's now getting to a point where finding relevant information and navigating through the player interface is getting pretty easy and comfortable. It's a pretty nice improvement over the last game.

I also see great potential in the ship managing and traveling features. Some of them are still pretty rough around the edges (like the map travel animations and map detail), but with a few expansions i think they have an opportunity to cram a lot of interesting gameplay inside. Especially the part about managing your ship, crew, finding supplies and new places on the map. This part of the game could branch out into it's own game, so adding it to an already interesting rpg can lead to a lot of great gameplay opportunities not present in other games.

I haven't had much time to play it yet, so some of the things that now look novel to me might become boring or tedious, but overall the game seems to be heading in the right direction and improved upon a lot of things in the first game. My only gripe so far is that the games is pretty easy on hard. Have not reloaded the game even once and go through most enemies pretty easy. This is a very stark contrast to the first game, where the very first fights coming out of the cave are really tough on the higher difficulties.

I won't hold Obsidians hardworking devs responsible for the recent drama, and the ship stuff sounds interesting, but the bolded text indicates my problem with RPG's these days, and why I usually wait years to play them as opposed to buying at release.

I think I'll wait until it's on sale before picking it up. I'd usually buy RPGs on launch, but Obsidian has a reputation for bugs, and I'd rather wait until they've fixed all the worst shit before getting it, and waiting until summer sales seems like a good timeframe for that.

This has been out for a year now! Today we saw the launch of patch 5.0 bringing this game to completion.

All the DLC:s are out and they've added a turn-based mode. If you haven't played yet, now is probably a good time!

Patch 5.0 Highlights

There are a host of bug fixes in the 5.0 update that you can read on our forums, but here are some of the highlights for you:
  • New Ship UI
    • An update to the UI has been implemented that will come up any time you engage with a ship on the seas that brings a more elegant way to perform ship-to-ship encounters.
  • Turn-Based Mode Out of Beta
    • Thanks to feedback from the community, we have made a lot of changes to turn-based mode to account for bugs and balance fixes and it is now in full release with the 5.0 patch.
  • New Story Content Added
    • After listening to feedback on the critical path of the game when it came to reactivity with Woedica and Eothas, so we’ve decided to go in and write new lines and get them recorded by the original actors to add more to that aspect of the game.
  • Anarchist Path Adjustments
    • Some critical path items have been moved out of Neketaka to other locations in the Deadfire to address the difficulty and length that the game had if choosing to not side with a faction at Ondra’s Mortar.
  • The Ultimate
    • The final God Challenge will be live with the 5.0 patch. This challenge, “The Ultimate” will turn on all other God Challenges, Trial of Iron, Path of the Damned, and Solo mode.

I played this and all of the DLC's. It is good. About 80 hours total with the DLC's which were a mixed bag. If you aren't into debates on the nature of the afterlife give it a pass perhaps although you could pal up with the atheists. Oh and always buy these games on sale. They are over priced. That is why I have yet to try Planescape 2.
