Playstation 2 DVD player question...

...Alright, so I know that the PS2 is an all-region encoded DVD player, but is it also NTSC/PAL universal? I.E. -

Could I import a movie from England (PAL), and play it in the States on my Playstation 2?

Any help would be much appreciated. I don't particularly want to fork out the dough for a PAL/NTSC All region DVD player if I don't have to.

As far as I know it can play all region dvd's, however there is a problem. You would have to get a mod chip. It is programmed to play only the dvd's from the region you purchased it. The hardware is capable, but I'm not sure about PAL support.

Nooooo...

The PS2 is an all region encoded DVD player. All you have to do is press the button and change the region, depending on what you're watching.

Pop a DVD in, press SELECT, go to SETUP, then to the security menu. You can change you're region there.

Not to be too nagging, but what would be the use of being multi-region if you can't code between PAL and NTSC either? I never heard of a multi-region DVD player that couldn't do both.

That said, the PS2 isn't supposed to be able to play all regions, so...Why not just test the damn thing?

Well I don't want to fork out 40 bucks for an import of Battle Royale unless I can play it.

Why don't you just get the dvd you want in the designation you can play it with? Hmmm? Riddle me that, mcduff! :whatever:

I don't know, maybe its because they don't have that certain DVD in Hati, which is where Malk lives.

Mohrg

American stupidity means a lot of the best foreign films aren't released in America. In particular; Battle Royale. The Japanese refused to sell the rights to the Americans, seeing as how you (especially Quentin Tarantino and Miramax) butchered previous films.

I hear there's a Criterion edition of Spoorloos, tho'. That film is such a work of genius.

Please, Battle Royale wasn't that good. Tarantino's flicks are better IMO.

What region is your PS2 set to. I found a special edition Battle Royale DVD on Ebay that works fine on my US PS2. It only cost me $30 and it came with two other Jap flicks.

BTW, if you ever come across 2 Japanese films called "Versus" and "Suicide Circle", do yourself a favor and avoid them at all costs. They're up there on my "Shittiest Films Ever" list.

Eeheheheheeee, teeheeeeheeee, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHA!!!!!!

Kill Bill had, like, a fraction of the value of Battle Royale. A small fraction.

Now Hana-Bi, there's a Japanese classic. Kateshi Kitano rocks (not a violent film, but a very moody, beautiful film)

That probably because you got the Korean Special edition, which is NTSC and Region Free, but has shitty subtitles. I don't want shitty subs.

I liked Suicide Circle...until the last 30 minutes or so. Then it was just...wierd.

Hohoho, Hohoho, Hohoho,
Merry Christmas to you too!!!!!

Could you be a bit more clear on Battle Royale's value? And you're also leaving out his other films like Pulp Fiction.

Yup, that's the one. The subs were kinda bad, although I've seen worse. They made some parts sound corny, and there was one or two parts that contained straight up Engrish.

You're only other option is to mod your PS2, and even then, I don't know if that would let you play PAL DVD's.

As for Suicide Circle, I think the first 30-40 minutes were good and actually a bit intense. After that, however, the film lost all coherence and any semblance of a plot was thrown out with it as well. Not to mention that it had enough Japanese pop music to make me gag.

Hmmm.... I'll be damned, it says you can change the region, but it doesn't work. It does if you have a mod chip, says a buddy of mine. He also had to buy a PAL-NTSC converter (illegal and expensive). It would be easier and cheaper if you were to buy an all region DVD player, but it's illegal in the U.S. too I think.
