Pointless Thefts

Hmm, I must admit I've stolen some things in my days, like cherries, and nuts and apples, pears, plums and I did that mostly because of the rush you get when you are not caught... and those things were of some use to me, fruits are good for a growing boy! I never stole anything as pointless as a piece of fence, and usually fences keep thieves away, or at lest that is the point, fences don't get stolen!
Stealing hood ornaments was very popular when I was a kid and lived in Serbia. The Mercedes one’s were the easiest. There were two strategies that I was aware of. You could twist it a couple of times and it would bend the metal enough to break it off; or you could pull it forward and hit the base with a rock.
We did that once, but is was more of a revenge thing. The guy we stole the emblem from had slashed our ball, just because we accidentally kicked it into his yard, and mind you we didn't destroy anything with it .... so he had it coming....
What amazes me is the fact that these kids steal anything and every thing that is not tied or bolted down, like clothe lines, the planks of wood from the benches and many other such things, it looks more like vandalism... This world is headed down a road paved with good intentions.....

And the fact that everyone is inside a little kid...

Ive stolen my friends wallets, i even stole my teachers car keys in 7th grade. back in the day i was a master pick pocket ( tho i always gave stuff back) i could steal just about anything

BUT now im a changed person :D 8)

I'm curious, what did your teacher say when you gave him/her back the car keys?

Once i've watched a TV programme about pickpockets. There was a guy who (in case of experiment) has stolen a watch while tyalking with someone. His next prey was a man with a tie. Guess what happened :D

Usually kids steal candy, fruits, shiny or colorful things, stuff like that, and stealing is not an innate ability of a human being, it's more like something he picks up on the way....
My point is: while many kids might swipe this or that, they usually do not specialize in it.... So qualified theft is not a normal occupation for a kid, not by my book it isn't.
And I read this in yesterday's paper that a "vicious" gang of thieves that broke into stores after closing time and stole all they could carry. The thieves had robbed 4 stores in 2 days, 4 stores in 2 days, and they were 9, 10, 12, and 13 years old, all school dropouts. Now these thefts were far from being pointless, but consider the fact that their average age is 11! They can only be put in a correctional facility for minors...
What is the world coming to?

I don't think they fully realize what they did. It was just stealing a big candy. Like breaking into a shop to eat some chips, because "daddy doesn't want to buy some".

In the criminal diary of my town there is a crime like that.

Believe it or not, this kind of behavior is NORMAL. Well, at least in agricultural societies. You can forget about seeing problems like these widespread in Huter/Gatherer societies.

The worst part is that it is very possible that "daddy" put them up to it because if he would have done that himself he would have gone to jail, so he just uses his children. And "daddy" doesn't have to be their father, he can also be a older thief who uses them just the same.

The point is that our agriculture is worth shit, our industry is kind of down, not yet out but that can be fixed, most of our people don't know how to hunt as for our gatherers they are abroad, either gathering strawberries in Spain or picking wallets out of people's pockets around Europe. Based on that how would you characterize my country?

I can't agree with you on this. Children just want to do something on their own, with some fun, if possible. Staeling can be seen by them as another "hide and seek" game, so they do that, even if it's pointless. They enjoy disobeying their parents, so if they have no possibility to disobey them in little things, then they start to mess in greater scale, where their parents can't surely determine if their children are guilty for that. Children don't receive their punishment so they continue that behaviour.

Read my post again, and highlight the part where I even hinted at the fact that those kids stole as a sign of protest twords the parents. What I meant was that these kids are taught to steal when they are little and then, when they grow up they end up lacking the "social conditioning" usually assured by the family and school, and the family is not tolerating this behavior, it encourages and stimulates it's development.

Hey, I just meant that... Almost.

There is nobody to teach them stealing, they do this spontaneously, rather in group than alone.

By the way, lately my brother and some other kids have stolen some parts of a disassembled car that was no doubt someone's property. For example, they took the back seat to sledge on it on some hill nearby. They almost killed themselves carrying it, but when I asked my brother he said: "This was worth it". Anyway, I think my brother is a normal kid and there is a little chance for him to become a desocialized person.

Consider that.

when i stole things i stole them because i simply could, i never hurt anyone and i usally gave stuff back. some kids steal for the fun of it and others steal because, stealing things is the only way for them to feel in control. many children that have a hard and challenging where they have no control of their situation, often revert to thief, drugs, and booze. i have seen many of my friends go through this, and i know many people can grow out of it.

Yea stealing is pretty stupid. Yet sometimes it can be fun. Unless you get caught. Sometimes the stupider the thing you steal (i.e. fences, pumpkins, lawn nomes) the funnier it is to you and your friends. But you got to take it back or you are a criminal. The law is mean so don't go against and get caught.
