Have you played Wasteland?

My college buddy and I spent days and days figuring out the interface, dying and dying again, learning where not to go when not well-armed, where not to walk in the desert (radiation!!!), who not to aggravate, etc. I have fond memories of the guy with the Red Ryder BB gun blasting us to death in the first town, Highpool - we thought perhaps he had appeared because we'd killed a kid there. (It was an accident - honest! Dang rabid dog, anyway!) (Come to think of it, his appearance must have been an xmas easter egg. Hmmm.)

Then there was the heart-pounding shot of adrenaline in the gut the first time that the slicerdicers roared up on us (from OFF-screen, too far away for us to shoot back with our pea-shooters) and blasted the hell out of us. And the time we approached the Citadel, pistols in hand, and got blasted to bits with rockets. Aah, the memories. And the cool thing was that with multiple characters in the party, my friend and I could play as a team, despite the single-player game engine. Every combat allowed us to choose our own actions.

Wasteland was the first *really fun* RPG I'd ever played on the PC, and the most fun I had with PC games until I finally got my hands on Fallout. I certainly found Fallout's interface much more user-friendly, but I did like Wasteland's storyline and its complexity, and I still occasionally dig it out for a fun change of pace.

I still have the original game discs ... and I may even have the original box still, buried somewhere in the clutter in the basement, of course. :-)

(And yes: I finished Wasteland. Multiple times. :-) )

Yes I have. I just watched ending recently.
Unfortunatly I could not defete game withhout walkthrough. So I'm willing to defete game without walkthrough.

I have and finished it more times then I can ever hope to remember. I can actually say it is my favorite game of all time.

I just played it again this week and I forgot how much fun that game is. It's a great game.

I've always enjoyed the full auto and explosion sound effects. Maybe because they're pretty much the only sounds in the game they seem better, but I've always found those to be very satisfying.

I played multiple times and the fun is still there.
Not only the fun but there are things that you couldn't get in newer games.

But, on the other hand, i never finished.
The game can get pretty unforgiving.
I always end up screwing myself at some point.
Considering the way the save system works, it you screw up, you have to restart from the beginning.
Since i don't like restarting right after i have lost, i usually wait a few months before re-retrying.
So even the parts that i did multiples times remain fresh.

The first time i tried it was when i learned that there was a kickstarter for the sequel.

I just downloaded it from GOG a few weeks ago. I got to the part where you kill the Bunny Master but haven't touched it again yet.

Ah man, I miss this game. It took a helluva effort to get it running, but it was awesome.
GoG release is great, but too little time now. I must play it again before proceeding to the sequel though.

I don't understand; the modern releases shouldn't take any effort. Do you mean doing it in DOSBox before these re-releases came out?

Yeah, the DOSBox one. I played it a few years back. It was a pain in the ass at times, as it was unstable and I had to make back-up save files all the time.

I got the GoG one several months ago, but I still haven't played it beyond 5 minutes. Not enough time for addicting games at the moment.

Huh, I feel like you were doing something wrong. I've put hundreds of hours into Wasteland both directly through DOS and through DOSBox. Never had any problems. You do, of course, have to do obvious things in DOSBox settings such as: set CPU to about 3000-to-10000 depending on your personal preference, and mess with the sound settings a bit. I don't remember doing much beyond that.

What operating system were you playing it on?

A little bit, Yes. I was browsing the internet one day. And i stumbled across an article on a wiki that mentioned that fallout 1 was originally going to be a sequel to a game called
"wasteland" . So i decided to look it up on YouTube. And i decided to play it just for the hell of it. I haven't played that much of it though. but i played enough that I have begun to notice some very strong similarities to fallout.

This poll should be changed to the following 2 options for voters:

- Yes, and it's amazing!
- No, and I will right now.

What's with the Wasteland game?it's just an old pixel game,i didn't played it because it's way to old.I don't even know why ppl are talking about it???

- Wasteland is the main inspiration for the Fallout series. It is nice to find out how many Fallout features/references come from.
- It was made by Brian Fargo and inspired the Fallout 1. So it has many similarities. If you liked Fallout, it is likely that you will like Wasteland too.
- Considering there aren't much Fallout-like out there, that is another way to extend your Fallout enjoyement.
- There is a sequel coming. So you might miss some references and lore if you skipped the first game.
- It was also one of the very first game to emphasis on C&C by the simple fact it was a persistent world. What you did in location X will remain for your whole playthrough. No forgiving after 3 days.
- Many people played it when it was released. Other also want to learn from where the thing came from. Other just enjoy that kind of games.
- Many books/movies/music are old, were made with outdated technology. There are still watched/enjoyed/studied. I don't see why good or deep video games should be disregarded, just because of time.
- Not sure about games like Wasteland 1, but you will find many devellopers still wanting to work around gameplay or graphics that you might find outdated. There is also a large player community to support them, which allow them to pursue.
- Other people simply don't have a choice, as their computer is outdated too.
- No matter what some people here could say, you aren't required to play it or to love it. If it isn't you thing, nobody would blame you.
- On the other hand, does it really bother you that some people might like some of the things you hate ? Or is it curiosity ?

Personnally, i also have a important interest in writting, deep characters, rich universe, grey morality, vision of society, with a low science fiction context. I look forward those kind of content in many medium, like books, comics, mangas, video-games, movies, TV shows etc... I think Wasteland could be a nice addition on these aspects and can keep my interest when it get to these points. It is not always the case, but there are great moments. I also like to look forward into where the things come from. Playing Wasteland 1 feels like playing Fallout:Origins, in a studying way.
