IIRC the last topic was Best Book of all Time....?

The distinction is there, but pretty vague for most people. In that thread itself the fact that taste is relative and thus the concept "best book" is spurious at best came up several times. Not everyone makes the distinction and when they do it's often minor, like me saying Dostoevskij's Crime and Punishment is greater than the Brothers Karamazov even though I like the latter better.

WTF? Why? Crime and Punishment is genius, though Master and Margarita gets the title of favorite Russian book, as Ivan Bezdomny is like Raskalinikov only the book has homicidal, alcoholic massive black cats.

I agree that these threads need to be less common in the forums even though they seem to be different at a first, quick glance.

But that said, it did bring upon some debate over the best books between Kharn and John Uskglass.

Cheers,

Bezdomny? That's a funny name. Not as funny as Dolgoruki or Sobochkij (or Suka! HAH!), but still funny.

That said, Crime and Punishment is the better of all Dostoevskij's masterpieces. It doesn't have the heavy layer of amateurism that covers The Idiot (which has been widely criticised) and it has a brevity that is refreshing to those that managed to wrestly through the Karamazov Bros. It also has a lot more social criticism and philosophy, which for Russian literature is always relevant.

Why do I like it less?

I had a lot more trouble with CnP than I had with the Idiot or the Karamazovs. This might be because the nihilistic, slighty insane and constantly hallucinating Raskolnikov does not make for an attractive hero for me. I cared little for his plight and had a lot of trouble getting through the fever vision bits. It was too much effort with too little reward.

The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

And btw The book(s) > The movie

Mmm the first book was good. The rest were tarnish.

My favorites are probably Ender's Game and The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

I agree, the content of the first book was completely unexpeted the other two were more of the same, but in a lamer kind of way!

I did in enjoy the idea of the milkyway resturant though... that boggled my mind for several days!

Desperation(One of the longest books that I couldnt put down for hours at a time)

Of Mice and Men. (It says so much in such little words)

A Rose for Emily(Best. Suprise. Ending. Evar.)

Thank you guys, i'll have a great list of books to read in the future

So you mean to say that this entire thread was for the sole purpose of collecting information to help you decide on good books so you know what to read?

Hmm... favorite books, 'eh?

-Don Quixote de la Mancha (leave it up to you to pick up a good translation for yourself).
-Snow Crash (especially because of how it all comes together at the end).
-Kim (hurrah for Kipling).

I suppose Crime & Punishment was all ready mentioned.

There would be more, but I'm deprived from my family's book collection, I would need to refresh my memory my looking over the book shelves first.

You know, I have always liked Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency better than any of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books.

I have always liked The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. Woot, i'm on the spectrum!
