Postapocalyptic Student Project

First time out of the vault
Hey Folks,

(I already posted this on the bethesda Forum-hope you don't mind
This is not really fan fiction in particular, but I just didn't want to violate any forum rules, cause its art/ fiction. If Im wrong here, please admins -put it where you want)

we are three students from Nuremberg, Germany and we had to do a little title design exercise for media design.
We chose to do it postapocalyptic. :) That thing is just an intro sequence for a fictitious movie, so don't expect too much storyline.

We took lots of our inspirations from titles like "mad max" "postman" "fallout" "28dayslater" and so on.

Please see it here on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HKvRxDhIEo

Perhaps we put it somewhere else in the near future, if we get some free webspace - the Quality of youtube definitely s**** big ba*** , so you can hardly read the typo on the billboards.

We did allmost everything with analog techniques to achieve a handmade look. The Characters are filmed and rotoscoped manually with pen and paper. Coloration was made with water color for backgrounds and digital for the Characters. In the end we put all things together in a socalled compositing process on pcs, and had to get the rights for the old vintage material, that is projected in the horizon.

The music comes from the "Great Bertholinis" http://www.hazelwood.de/bertholinis/index.php.
We did some sounddesign in our school's studio and used some of the sounds of our bmg sound archive in addition (our school has a deal with them)
The ambient music is made by us with a violin bow on guitar and metal.

That thing was a lot of work for three... in the end two guys.

Please notice the duck and cover turtle on the tin ;)

hope you enjoy!

Good. I didn't like the country music at all tough. Too "jolly". Also, story-wise, why'd she shoot him? They seemed to live together or something.

yea, but maybe she killed him for his adidas shoes. ;)

This was a titledesign exercise. We just wanted to make the viewer curious about what will follow in a final movie. The final project is just fictitious.

Our topic was the atmosphere and the technique.

This was by the way really frustrating- work on something that will never be made.

it's pretty nice, though i'm not sure about a couple of things:
- using drawn stuff with a real life recording background. it has been done well before, but here, it felt off. your own drawn stuff probably could've garnered more appreciation if you hadn't used the old plane footage.
- the shouldpad on the dude seems rather stupid. sure, it's a funny reference, but here it looks kinda crummy.
- the AK is too slim when she lets it dangle at her side (when you see the top of the receiver, not the side view).

The rotoscoped characters remind me of Ralph Bakshi. Nice work there.

The music indeed doesn't fit, especially since you're trying to mix it with ambient sounds.

also, I was kind of doubting whether I should put this on NMA's frontpage, but the fact that it's 6 minutes long and only has about 2 minutes of actual animation kind of cleared it up for me. If you're going to do something that short, don't make a huge intro and extro, that's just stupid

@ Brother None

Yea...I think i got it, but. We had to thank a few people, since this is non commercial work. All people who helped us did this without money and food.

Its really hard to make a project without money. And we have to pay tuition fees of 600 Euros half a year for our university. That kills me actually. And even an animatied movie costs money. You have to pay for light and camera and stuff.
So that's for the outro.

The intro was just the topic. We had to do a title design. You can say this whole thing is an intro.

It is -as I mentioned above- non commercial. So if you want, we could cut the outro and parts of the intro for your site and send it to you in even better quality, but as you said-it would be short then.

@polynikes: in fact, she was keen on his shoes ...and he was a bad lover, you know?

Hey folks.

Thanks “nma-fallout” and “bethesda forum” community for good, hard and fair criticism on our little
clip !!
Here is some billboard art we made for this clip. These appear in the film but because of
bad youtube quality you can hardly read the typo.

We have an obvious relation to fallout and van burrens concept art in this one.
(this one http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=622)
During our inquiry on everything that had to do with atomic bombs, we heard about nuclear tests in Nevada. We tried to make fun of this - Atomic bomb watching as aretirement tour.

We thought an ad for convertibles could be funny in a contaminated environment.
