Problem with weapon damage in FO2.

The Kotex Kid

First time out of the vault
Call me crazy, but I would imagine that a point-blank burst with JHP bullets coming out of an assault rifle would do a little more than 2-6 damage against thugs with leather jackets on. Yet, thats all I seem to do.

However, if I take a point-blank salvo of burst-fire from a 10mm JHP SMG, I get the elaborate death animation after taking 120 points of critical damage IN FUCKING COMBAT ARMOR.

What is going on here? I have 120% in small guns, it's broad day light, I'm so close to my enemies I'm sucking their cocks off, but a burst from an assault rifle only tickles them?

In case it was missed, this problem is really frustrating. I even begrudgedly set the game difficulty to EASY to see what would happen, and same thing.

Perhaps I'm not finding enough heavy firepower yet.

You do realise that the reason you get that amount of damage is because *it was a critical*. If you had scored critical against those thugs, then you'd have done that much damage as well.

Although you might want to download this little ammo patch and see if it changes anything.

On average I've seen the 10mm smg do more damage than the minigun (not the avenger or the vindicator). I think its because 5mm is not as powerful as the 10mm round, which stands to reason. And the 10mm smg will do well over a hundred points of damage, even without a critical (You will know this if you gave sulik one after you entered the den)

You're also having trouble finding the edit-button, eh?

Thank you for your worthless post.

I worded my problem wrong. When I said they kill me dead with "critical hits", I didn't mean they actually critically hit me all the time. What I meant to say was I'd use the same exact weapon as the thugs in Mordinos bar, burst fire them and do six damage. They turn around and burst fire me for 20-100 points of damage without a critical hit.

This led me to the feasable assumption that clearly something must be wrong if I'm wearing combat armor and dying in one sequence, while all three of my burst fires will only ever equal 6-18 points of damage.

Tried it, but don't understand how to install it. It's filled with .PRO files and this is what the readme says
Ammo patch 1.0

Very helpful indeed.

Its not really a patch, it just replaces the protos for certain ammo, well, you have to extract all the protos first, and the patch, then rename the patch, then replace the protos with the ones in the zip file. For me, I already did all those things, and If you do that much, its much more rewarding to edit the ammo to your likeing and or belief rather than use that ammo mod (for me it was just damn annoying)

Ok, what you said makes no sense. What 'patch' are you talking about? The only files included in patch41.zip are .PRO files. Rename what patch to what name?

All I did was copy the .pro files in the zip to the protos/items folder. I don't think I see much of a difference. Either the patch is useless or I just did it wrong because the readme is all dicked up.

While I appreciate the convienience of one site to get all the functional(?) Fallout files, perhaps it's time to do some spring cleaning. Some of the mods are dated around the same time the game came out, most don't work or they don't have readme's that make sense, or even contain a Human language.

Ok, there must be something seriously fucked up in my install. I'm simply not doing the amounts of damage I remember doing the last time I played FO2.

I'll spell it out as best I can and maybe I can get some answers.

Small Guns: 130%
Agility: 7
Perception: 8
Luck: 3
Tag Skills: Small Guns, Speech, Lockpick

Perks:
Awareness (1)
Bonus rate of fire (2)
Earlier Sequence (2)

I even have dermal and phoenix impact armor implants and I'm STILL being destroyed in combat with difficulty on EASY. Someone with my stats and packing a Pancor Jackhammer should be doing more than single digit damage to super mutants and other humanoids at point-black range.

What the hell is going on :(

well yes you should get more criticals....
HOWEVER, with finesse, all attacks do less damage

"Your attacks shows a lot of finesse. You don't do as much damage but you cause more critical hits."

Even if you score a critical, you will do less damage. However, you are supposed to do critical hits more often.

According to the Vault wiki, this is exactly what Finesse does, gameplay-wise:
All of your attacks do -30% damage. Your critical chance is +10%.

kind of a crappy trade-off IMNSHO

And with my shitty luck (3), and criticals going off your luck for success, it's no wonder I've been a weakling this far on. Now I have the Y3B or whatever purple-laser rifle and I'm handing out 23 minimun damage with each shot.

witha luck of 3 - your critical change with finesse (without any other perk bonuses) is 13% a shot

year when you get the better weapons, they will still do less damage, but at least it is still decent damage (and of course certain weapons increse your critical chance, i think)

I feel your pain..

I got all these assault rifles..combat shotguns...etc and can't do jack in damage..Sulik can though..
I have gotten more kills with pistols than rifles...

I'll unload a burst point blank and only do 6 damage while Sulik does 100 plus...yet with a pistol, the 44 and a certain 223 I do better....alot better and No one hander is not a Trait I have

Of course I have a Gauss now...and it's time for whack a mole!!

I can kill mutants in one shot with that...

But regular weapons and damage has made it imperative to bring along NPCs...until now..

It just doesn't seem fair I spent all my money on a auto shotgun ( not the combat one or the Pancor) and can't hit didley with it..even if I'm one step away..

And those assault rifles are useless...a full burst 10 total damage..yikes

Thank you Mr Gauss!!

Well, the damage is applied to each bullet when burst fireing (I believe it is, because all the rounds are treated indavidualy) and 5mm just plain sucks... most of the time. So thus, any apponents in armour greater than leather armour, aren't going to take much damage. Mostly, if your going small guns, If your like me, its felt less rewarding to use the gauss rifle... mostly cause of the insane modifiers on the ammunition.
