Problems With The Torr Quest

Big T

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
I've recently been having problems with the Torr quest (Helping him guard the Brahmin), no matter what I do, the game comes up with the message "You have failed to help Torr guard the brahmin".

THe only things different from usual are:
a) I've got Dogmeat as an NPC,
b) I'm wearing APA (I did the Brotherhood mission and got all the stat augmentations before going to klamath)
c) I've got a high Kharma rating (700+) and a high level after messing about killing lots of raiders etc.

Has anyone else had any problems completing this mission?

Oh, and It's patched using Celestials 1.05 patch.

Only trouble I've had with it when when i "accidentally" slaughtered all of torr's brahmin.

Funny question, I know, but does this only happen with the 1.05 patch?
That's a valid question, I'm afraid.

Alas, it never happened to me with nor without the 1.05 patch

That's why I put it into a sticky post in all-caps. ;)

Any more info on the problem other than whether this does/doesn't happen with the 1.05 patch? Big_T_UK, could you give us a blow-by-blow description, especially of what is going on when you get the failed message? I don't see what seems to be the problem, though I'm guessing it may be a possible problem with the map. I'd suggest a map restore, but only if you really need to. Use separate saves and swap in a fresh Klamath map (patched, to match your version) and check it out again. If the mission does finish like "normal" (nevermind the unfinished part with the brothers), then it could be something you did earlier in the town. If not, then it is likely related to something else, either the patch (dunno) or something you did beforehand in getting one of those items first.

If you want to check, after we've tried all this, get those enhancements in various orders and see if you can do the quest correctly or not. There may be some bogus scripting there that pointed to the wrong object, related to the objects you later get in the game and hosing up the Torr quest as well.

Who knows? They may have been trying to track that bug down at the same time they decided to drop part of the Torr quest. It seems very likely, and it would be great to fix the problem if it's something Celestial should look at.

Did you remember to wipe out the five or so scorpions in the lower-right hand corner of the map?

Sorry for the delay there, I kinda forgot about the post/problem.
I've never had the problem before (using any of the other patches), but I've never tried it with the 3 "Unusual" thing that I mentioned previously (Dogmeat, APA, V. High Karma).
Right, Blow-By-Blow then:
-Went to Klamath
-Talked to John Sullivan (to get raised Unarmed/Melee skill)
-Talked to Torr, agreed to help
-Killed scorpions
-Talked to Torr again (gives floating message saying "Bugs dead, Moo-moos safe")
-Left map

I have also tried killing the Duntons after the scorpions (whilst still in combat mode) and not talking to Torr again, but I still got the "failed" message.
I have also tried with & without Dogmeat in my party, and with & without APA, with still the same results.

I don't see what seems to be the problem, though I'm guessing it may be a possible problem with the map. I'd suggest a map restore, but only if you really need to.
I also tried that, but still no luck.

 Yes.

Does that include the augs as well?

I'd say from a testing standpoint, you should try doing the same thing with the basic patch, in the same order. That would be the litmus test of the whole situation.

I don't know if there is one, but could the saves conceivably be converted to the official patch? That may take some work, but I think it would be an invaluable testing tool. Then we could take the save before Torr and put it into an earlier codebase.

Unfortunately, I'm a bit out of my depth here.
I have absolutely no idea if the savegame could be converted, or how you might try doing so.

I tend to think that if it hasn't happened to anyone else, then it's not a major bug, ie: it doesn't really need fixing.

That would be something that Celestial would have to look into, and yet again, I don't know if it would be worth the time for the troubleshooting benefits. It could likely be solved in other ways.

I will agree that it's minor, but if it's something a post-support patcher wants to look into, they would be the ones to take it into consideration. Who knows, it might actually cause more problems when the issueis fixed.

I deleted all savegams today on Fallout2 and then reinstalled it with 1.05 patch and Miria v 1.2.
Everything is working perfectly here! Sofar I havent experienced any glitches like I used to do with official patches. I could never complete Farrels garden mission in Modoc with official patch but it works nicely in 1.05
I cant help you, its just a few hundred XP anyway so just move on :)

I know it's just a few hundred XP, I just don't like leaving it incomplete.

On another note, why did you feel it neccesary to resurrect this thread when you had nothing meaningful to add?

I've spend quite a bit of time investigating this. Right now my only hunch is that the game screwed up while counting the radscorpions.

When you kill the last scorpion, you should get the message "You've killed all the radscorpions that were threatening the brahmin." in the pipboy. If you've not got it, then the problem is probably simply that one is hiding somewhere. There are supposed to be six of them in total.

Given you've killed 6 then there's a problem with the game's count of killed radscoprions. Also make sure you killed them, not just KO'd them, though that's hard to miss.

The only other conditions making you not able to finish it are:
- Torr leaves the map.
-> If you've finished the quest (duh)
-> If you've attacked him and he is close to the map limit
- Toor is not guarding his brahmin
-> You've not convinced him to help him and went on the map
-> You've convinced the dunton brothers to leave Torr alone
- Any brahmin getting killed.
- Torr getting hit by you.
- Torr getting killed (anywhere), duh.

Incidentally...

If you take the Dunton's quest ("Rustle the brahmin") and botch it (telling them that somebody's watching and calling them off) I believe you can't go to use the bathhouse - Sally tells you she won't service you because you're a sad loser ;) I don't believe it has been mentioned in the walkthroughs. As if it had counted - there's a load of brothels later in the game...

I actually got a mail mentioning this, so it may be in the next version, even though it doesn't have any real effect. You gravedigger you.
