PS3 to get DRM?

So, we can now add moronic copy protection to the list of things that suck about Playstation 3, along with overinflated price, mediocre specs and no backward compatibility? Is it just me or will PS3 be the most worthless piece of shit in the history of consoles?

I'm pretty sure the PS3 will have backwards compatibility. Maybe this only concerns PS3 games. I doubt the xbox 360 will, however.

It's not like this patent makes sense, it would pretty much be financial suicide. One of the main reasons of owning a console is to bring your games to a friend's house. And the Playstation has always been about backwards compatibility. If this is true, I will have absolutely NO doubt that the Sony executives are retarded vegetables, run by a crazy kamikaze pilot with his head up his ass.

Microsoft and Nintendo could have teamed up to do a smear campaign against Sony and it wouldn't have been half as effective as the smear campaign Sony is running against itself.

Seriously though, this whole copyright and anti-piracy bullshit is starting to go way too far. "You don't own that copy of Windows, that shitty pop cd, that dvd, that videogame, you're just purchasing a license to use it under an extremely restrictive set of circumstances. " To be blunt, fuck that; either sell me the thing and it's mine to do with as I please or else my money stays in my pocket. These companies are signing their own death warrants with their dull-witted and heavy-handed attempts to force people to be "the perfect consumers", and beyond that punishing people who buy things legitimately to the point where you're better off pirating and cracking things even if you did actually buy them. I only hope some better way comes sooner rather than later.

Most software will be backwards compatible, but not hardware. So you can forget using that fancy racing wheel or your old MGS3 saves with the new PlayStation.

Seriously thats half the reason to own a console.

This is fucked up. I honestly wont get a PS3 if this turns out to be true. Not that its a big deal anyway since I game mostly on my PC.

I wanted to buy a XBOX 360 at first, but they cater to much towards ONLINE. EVERYTHING is ONLINE. It's the new wave of the future. My ass......
I admit it's fun to play online, but they emphasize way too much on online playability. The XBOX 360 is backward compatible only if it's hooked up to the internet, so it can download the emulation software. F#%$ that! After I heard that, I decided to buy a PS3 when it comes out. Now it looks like I won't be doing that either. Thank God for computers......

No one needs to give up on the PS3 yet, that patent was filed in 1999 and there's really no reason to think that it'll be used in the PS3 except for the fact that no one doubts Sony is stupid enough to do it. This is the company whose music cd's install almost completely undetectible "rootkits" on your computer if you have autorun enabled, after all.

not to mention what if your ps3 dies and you have to replace it?

and there are 3 reported viruses that use the sony rootkit bugs to hide themselves now.

Has it?

If you count the smaller versions of the PS1 and PS2 as the same as the originals, the the Playstation brand has been exactly 50% about backwards compatibility.

The PS2 was/is backwards compatible.

The PSP was/is not.

One out of Two is a strange measure of always.
;)

What would it be compatible with? It really doesn't count. Lack of compatibility between portable consoles and stationary consoles, even though it's the same brand, isn't something to whine about.

I was not whining, merely being a pedant.

Claiming that backwards compatibility is a tradition falls down when you refuse to acknowledge 50% of the relevant hardware.

The PSP could have, with a minor add on, been made backwards compatible, à la Sega Game Gear/Master System convertors, or the Nintendo Super Gameboy.

The PSP had no predecessor. What would it be compatible with? It doesn't count in the Playstation compatibility issue. Just because it's labeled "Playstation" doesn't mean it falls under the same category, so stop being picky.

Nice moonwalking.

Yes, notice that they said "the Playstation", not "ALL things that have Playstation in the title or wear the brand name". They were also talking about consoles, no mention of handhelds unless you wanted to twist it out of context, because consoles and "the Playstation" are specifically mentioned. Which means the product line of Playstation, not the brand name, not some spin-off hardware product line.

I could include some parallel between the NES and the Game Boy, but I think you get the point by now.
