Ratko Mladic arrested

Finally, NATO finally got him, I hope he goes away for a long time, unfortunately, they're still a lot of war criminals from the yugoslav wars on the run, quiet a few really, hopefully this guy may have some links.
 
No, NATO didn't do anything. They didn't have any part in this action whatsoever. It was all done by Serbian forces in cooperation with Hague tribunal.

And there aren't many more war criminals from Yugoslav wars - the "bigger" ones, that is. After Karadzic and Mladic, Goran Hadzic is the only "big" one left that Hague (and Serbia) is after.
 
Nice to know Serbian forces don't need a country to hold its hand to do pretty good things. I'm on about the minor war criminals as well, war crimes are crimes nonetheless, no crimes are exceptable.

Indeed, but when it comes to Yugoslav wars, many people would say that there are too many criminals and that their exact count is lost, thus catching them all being little more than impossible.
 
About damn time, I say. Milosevic and Karadzic are/were Machavellian sociopaths without a shred of morals, but Mladic is a beast. He actually reveled in the mass murder of thousands, rather than simply seeing it as a means to an end.

As Atomkilla pointed out, Mladic was arrested by the same people who have been keeping him hidden for the past fifteen or so years - the Serbs. Specifically, he was located and hauled in by BIA (Serbian Security and Intelligence Agency), after an elaborate search operation that consisted of no longer pretending the target was not under their nose this whole time.

Worry not, though, Serbia will be handsomely rewarded for its cooperation. It seems inevitable they will now be granted the status of an EU candidate (and deservedly so). Ironically, the fact that Croatia seems poised to end its EU accession talks this year, and become a full EU member in 2013, may have been the mainspring behind Serbia's sudden breakthrough. As it stands, Serbia is already as much as a decade behind Croatia in its EU accession (and perhaps unfairly so), though with Mladic out of the way, I think they stand a good chance of entering EU around 2021.

I just wonder if EU will be around that long.

Indeed. The man ordered some of the worst atrocities of the Croatian war, yet Croatia never even bothered to press charges against him. Then again, given his failing health, I doubt he will even live to see the end of the Srebrenica trial, let alone serve any kind of sentence.
 
It's funny how Serbia and Croatia hold on to their war criminals to play at opportune moments. The line between hero and criminal seems very thin in the Balkans, with mysteriously wealthy war heros and not-so-mysteriously wealthy politicians.

Oh well, at least not every criminal benefitted from the war.

No sentence is good enough for those monsters. Even death penalty is too light for them.

Well, an unfortunate thing. Serbian population is divided among themselves on whether to support and consider Mladić and others as war heroes, or to make them pay for what they have done.

This wasn't the first operation of this sort. About four years ago, BIA had Mladić down, knew the location, had proper intel and so on, but he managed to slip away. Most likely (and many believe so), it was corruption among BIA's forces that left him a chance to escape.

Serbia and Croatia have (unfortunately) been in bad relations for many years, even before the nineties, when it was still Yugoslavia. They are trying to settle and improve relations nowadays, but many people on both sides don't agree with that, thus leaving both sides divided among themselves. Who knows what kind of effect a press charge by Croatia would make.
Things are already hot, with security level in Serbia being raised all over the country. I personally believe there will be protests about this in Serbia (one of the leading Serbian political parties has already scheduled a rally on Sunday), and some of them will (most likely) turn into violent riots.

In any case, Mladić and his fellow criminals deserve the worst of the worst. I mean, he killed more than Bin Laden. He is probably the man with most blood on his hands on planet at this moment.
 
Arrested? :shock:

I thought the special forces just shoot him in the head and throw his body in the sea. :lol:
