The blazing sun beat down on Oscuro’s rough skin. The sky was clear allowing the brilliant star to scorch the desert dry. Oscuro sat silently watching over the wasteland. His eyes were keen and he could observe the tiniest detail of his habitat.
To the east he spotted a hunting radscorpion party. There were 3 gigantic arachnids surrounding a smaller animal that was hard to see. Oscuro guessed it was a coyote or a jackrabbit. Oscuro felt the slight rumble in his stomach. He had not eaten in 2 days. It was feeding time.
One lone radscorpion had not followed the group back to the den. It sat motionless in the open field. Oscuro’s dark shadow fell on the radscorpion as he advanced on it. The radscorpion noticed Oscuro’s presence and jumped to life preparing for battle.
Oscuro was 6 foot 2 and weighed approximately 175 pounds. He was slender (probably from scarcity of food) but muscular. He was pretty much bare-assed except the cloth material he wore around his waist (tribals don’t pay much attention to the latest fashions). He stood strait holding a large spear that made him look like a true hunter. The radscorpion’s itself was only 3 feet tall but it was a good 7-foot long. But the most intimidating feature was it’s towering tail that rose 9 feet into the air.
Without warning the radscorpion charged. Its six legs repetitively stabbed the ground as it moved towards Oscuro. Oscuro readied himself now holding the spear with 2 hands, the tip pointing towards his foe. His legs bent slightly as he stood on the balls of his feet. The radscorpion got within 3 feet and brought his tail down with lighting speed. The radscorpion shrieked in agony. Blood squirted in all directions. Oscuro had raised his spear and it was now sticking strait through the tail of the radscorpion. Oscuro ripped out the spear and then rammed it directly into the brain of the radscorpion. The radscorpion’s limps twitched wildly and then went limp. Oscuro licked the blood from his face and smiled with satisfaction.
5 minutes later the radscorpion was cooking over a roaring fire. Oscuro’s stomach was deeply thankful for the precious nutrition. Oscuro bit a hunk of meat off the leg and chewed loudly and happily. He had always liked radscorpion meat. It had a very distinct, spicy kind of taste. Many people never knew what they were missing. In civilization, radscorpions are pests, only to be killed and left to rot. Only out in the wasteland, and mainly by tribesmen like Oscuro, did people eat radscorpions.
The sun had gone down and Oscuro returned home to his cave high up in the mountain. Another day, another meal thought Oscuro. Oscuro slept to the gentle sound of chirping crickets and occasionally, a killer mantis eating one.
Oscuro woke to the sound of gunfire. He heard a couple sub machine guns going off and over them he could hear a large caliber pistol. Then came the sounds of a retaliating heavy machine gun. Probably some sort of light support weapon. Finally he heard a loud explosion and then silence. Oscuro was up now gathering his weapons. He slung his spear on his back, a knife in his belt and for major situations, his Browning double barrel shotgun.
When he got down the hill, he peered around the corner to 2 groups firing at each other. As he watched, he saw it was a caravan being attacked by a large group of raiders. They 2 groups were facing each other and unfortunately to the raiders, they had their backs turned to Oscuro. There were already a large number of casualties. The man who had been firing the large caliber pistol lay on his back in a pool of blood. The entire left part of face had been crudely erased. He gripped a Beretta 9mm. In his cold dead hand.
Oscuro observed as a moe-hawked raider fired wildly in the direction of the other party. A woman screamed out in pain. Oscuro bolted to the raider, clasped his left hand around the raider’s face and drew his knife. Quickly and brutally, Oscuro emptied the raider’s jugular vein. Another raider spotted Oscuro and sprayed fire from his Heckler and Koch. Oscuro dove behind a fiery wreck of a car but popped up a second later to put a 12-gauge shell into the raider’s forehead. A 3rd raider charged firing duel colt 45’s. One round caught Oscuro in the left forearm and another pierced his lower left abdomen. Oscuro fell backwards dropping his browning. The raider was now 10 feet from Oscuro reloading both guns. The heavy machine gun Oscuro had heard before now jumped to life. The raider’s body was ripped to pieces in a matter of seconds. Oscuro looked up from the bloody mess of a body and stared in amazement at the gorgeous blond carrying the Bozar. She was breathing heavily and looking at the raider she had just destroyed. She looked over to Oscuro whose eyes were wide and locked on her.
“Are you hurt?” She asked.
Oscuro broke from his trance. “Huh?” He replied dumbly. “Oh. No, I’m fine.”
“You’re bleeding pretty bad.” She admitted.
Oscuro looked down at the holes in his body. Just then the pain hit. He didn’t show it of course. He glanced at her to see she was still looking at him. He then examined the bullet wounds closer.
“No vital organs hit.” He reported “Bleeding…” he paused “It’ll stop pretty soon.”
She put down the gun that was almost bigger than her and offered her hand to help him up. He grabbed it and stood up. The pain was excruciating. She walked back to her party and he followed her.
“What are you doing out here?” She asked?
“I live here.” He answered. She looked at him questioningly. “I was born in a tribe about 500 miles east of here. When I was 17 I decided tribal life wasn’t for me. I went to New Reno but I got into debt pretty bad and they sent some people after me. I went to the desert to kind of wait out trouble and figure out what to do next.”
“What’s a pretty little girl like you doing out here?” He inquired
She turned to see him grinning. She gave him a mean smile and said, “This ‘pretty little girl’ just saved your sorry ass.”
Ouch. He thought. Keep it above the belt.
“Carrie.” She said, extending her hand.
“Oscuro” he shook her hand. She looked at him funny. “Tribal name. Whadaya gonna do?” he sighed.
