I have just been reading the posts under the Fallout 3 'speculation' part of the site. Am I just missing the obvious or can a game quite easily have both. THe example that immediately comes to mind is X-Com Appocalypse the third game in the series (following 2 turn based games) before each combat the playe has the option of real-time or turn based. The real-time option has a pause facility and plays in my opinion very well, as does the turn-baseed option.
Wouldn't a system along these lines keep everyone happy, those who want real tme can have it and those who lke turn-based can keep it. To allow thngs such as covering fire in a turn-based game you have the option of reserving action points at the begining of each turn which can be used for snap/aimed/burst shots during the enemy turn.
