Recommended New Vegas mods

Tiny Tim

Still Mildly Glowing
Hey there . I'm looking for lore-friendly stuff with a minimal approach , meaning that i'm not interested in overhauls but rather mods that " fix " stuff , possibly aiming to make it more like the old games or to generally make minor improvements , restore cut content and add cool stuff here and there .

So no bethesda-inspired gun mods and stuff like that and also no new quest mods with original fan fiction writing (unless you can recommend something excellent) . I'm also not particularly interested in fancy graphic mods .

Ideally , i'm looking for mods like this ( which to me is totally brilliant) :

Or this ( which looks cool ) :

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/61297/?

I'm currently using just the classic dialogue options , Yukichigai unofficial patch and blues radio ( a fun addition http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/37493/? ) .

I thought this was the place to ask :)

For a house/quest mod I recommend Afterschool Special, it doesn't break lore and you actually have to work for the house. http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/43757/?

NPC's travel adds a little more life to the land. http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/54107/?

this gives you the Pip-Boy 2500 http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/38844/?

I use this for roleplay, it allows me to not have to invest in hacking and lockpicking http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/56117/?

Last you can't go into the Mojave without the Man With No Name weapons and outfit. http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/40238/?

Thanks for these , monkey .

Some more similar recommendations :

Brahmin Variant Redux :

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/58871/?

This adds a new type of brahmin that fits the atmosphere of the territories around New Vegas . I was sceptical about this prior to trying it out but it's really nice , the brahmin are very well designed and it feels sort of natural having them around . The thing is that many of the stuff taken from fallout 3 feel out of place in New Vegas , and the brahmin are a good example of that . This mod's brahmin variants manage to capture the aesthetic of the mojave wasteland , an aesthetic which is in the base game is sometimes not clear enough , precisely because the mojave wasteland is built partly using designs made for the capital wasteland ( i'm guessing due to lack of time ) . So overall , this little modification makes me feel more like i'm in the classic fallout universe, as it's presented in Fallout New Vegas .

Barber Mirror :

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/37434/?

this adds two mirrors where you can change your hair , in the hotel room in novac and in the Lucky 38 suite . Yes , you can theoritically do it by console commands so there's so real need for it but this is much more fun for me . It also feels natural , like it was a feature meant to be there .

Semi-transparent Door Glass :

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/61326/?

Makes glass semi-transparent so you can through it , while maintaining its dirty look . Again , this does not alter the game atmosphere yet slightly improves it . Very well made .

More Seatable Couches ( seriously ) :

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/41686/?

Fixes couches that you previously could not sit on , like the one in your Novac room .

Two bears high fiving :

a true classic

Spacemunkey already suggested a mod for hacking and lockpicking but I am going to suggest another for that, it is more like the classic Fallout games and removes the minigames and allows the character to try and open the locks or hack depending on their skills. The immersive in the title is actually a joke about how all mods seem to be called immersive something these days (it was made by a couple of my friends so I wouldn't be much of a friend if I didn't suggested it ):
I can't be sure if this one fits with your criteria or not, but I will suggest it and you can take a look, for me it is one of the best mods for FNV in terms of exploration. The author went around and "un-boarded" some houses and made interiors for them, increases the places you can explore and usually it is quite lore friendly the same author also made a addon that improves the vanilla player's houses (also made by one of my friends so I am obliged to suggest it ):
I am out of FNV modding scene since the only mods I play with it for 5 years now are TTW, DarnUI and MCM so I am sorry I can't suggest more .

Darn it, I should have made a document with all the mods I would recommend for when I see posts like these as I have contributed to similar ones in the past.

I am going to start out with the mods that bring back missing content. Perhaps I will add more mods I feel will also add to the main game without breaking the content/context later.

Minor Gameplay Tweaks and Annoyance Removers:

Restored Content:

Armor and Clothing:

World and Visual Enhancements (no retextures or ENBs):
  • New Vegas Resigned: Don't let the word "Redesigned" scare you off, this is essentially Fallout Character Overhaul done right. Not only does it make the facial models much more varied and realistic, but it was made to enhance the lore. If an NPC says that they were trying to run from an attack away, but got hit in the leg and trapped in a cave, then that character will have a bruised and bloody face, and their character model won't just have a red spot on their pants, they will have a big gash and a hastily prepared bandage.
If that was all the mod did I would recommend it to everyone ever, however it does some controversial things. For one, it adds nudity. It doesn't add sex scenes or whatever, nothing gratuitous, but some of the slaves in the Legion officers tents at The Fort are naked because, you know, sex slaves. Also, he race-flops some of the characters, so NPCs with a black voice actor but a white character model will now be black, and vice-versa.
There are also some nitpicky design choices that I don't like, such as his decision to make Mr. Fantastic younger as well as getting rid of a couple characters facial hair, but overall his work on Chavez, Lanius, Pretty Sarah, animated tears, the addicts in South Vegas, etc far outweigh my minor gripes with the mod.
  • EDIT: Laurens Bathroom Poetry. Adds a bunch of graffiti to the restrooms.
  • EDIT: New Vegas Strip Overhaul
  • New Vegas Landscape Overhaul Fixed
  • Populated Casinos
  • Fellout NV
  • Be sure to check out NVInteriors Rewritten

EDIT:

Added items for flavor:

Animation:

Sound:

Since you can choose what you want to be installed and enabled, I would recommend looking at Project Nevada as it has some pretty neat specific options, including:
  • Inventory Item Sorter
  • Immersive Hardcore Needs. You character will yawn when they are tired, their stomach will growl when they are hungry, etc
  • When your character puts on goggles or a helmet witha visor, your First Person view will change, and your vision will deteriorate as the item condition worsens.

EDIT: That looks like it should be it.

Just a warning about Zan Autopurger, it actually can cause problems with other mods and the way it purges cells don't work as intended and the game engine actually reloads the data back after it happens, there is a more effective way of purging the cells and it doesn't even need a mod for it, all one needs is to change some values in the game ini files.

I will place a link here for a thread on another Forum that has the best performance guide I have ever seen, it is for the mod Tale of Two Wastelands but it works for FNV just the same and contains the steps to change the ini files in the third step:

Performance Guide
PS: Some of the posts in that thread contain other tweaks that might work to improve performance, so it is recommended to check them out, they might work for some but not for others.

I guess I ended up advertising TTW after all @Ninja .

Well, TIL. Thanks for the heads up. Just out of curiosity, I remember seeing
Code:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change before, it was used to get Fallout 3 working on Windows 7. Does that actually impact performance?

Anyway, edited in all of the other mods I found in my list that fit OPs criteria.

Yes it makes a difference for the better, and some people can't even run the game without that.
