Red Sonja

Well, I don't know about all of you, but I was certainly surprised and excited to learn that the classic movie Red Sonja was released on DVD today. That was the first movie of its type that I had ever seen, when I was like 5 or 6 years old. It was also my first introduction to Arnold Schwarzenneggar, and his asskicking awesomeness. Good movie. I recommend it if you haven't seen it. I saw it on sale at Bestbuy for $12.99, but I would expect there to be places that have it for cheaper somewhere.
Just wanted to let you know

Or you could buy Conan the Barbarian for the same price, and not fall asleep.

As I understand it, Marvel editor/writer Roy Thomas restyled the Red Sonja character heavily and put her in the same world as Conan (and this is the one the movie is based on). Probably there were only one or two short stories to begin with. They did a lot of things like that to Howard's minor characters - the male ones typically got their names exchanged for Conan's, since he was far and away the most popular one, and the stories did sort of lend themselves easily to this kind of conversion.

I remember it being a novel, but there was a series too, mostly, as you point out, based on teh Conan stories. However, I can't remember an original or one of the Sprague de Camp, or Carter versions of Conan which featured Red Sonja, but I read them when I was in grade school.

Great literature- no.

Fun pulp- yes.

(where you're ten they're kind of fun).

Dude, I'm 99.9% sure I've seen it on DVD here and there. Suncoast, specifically.

Hm...mebbe they were imports.

Ah well.

I used to like the movie when I was a kid, with little chinese princes and arnold jumping out of nowhere tackling giant mutant goldfish.
