Restoration Project Question

Well, that "bunch of gibberish" actually has very clear instructions within it, it just takes more than one look at it. Each function has a commented line above it which tells you exactly what it does.

For example:
Code:
;Set to 1 for a linear texture filter, or 0 to disable
TextureFilter=1

It's not that hard.

@ Hellbane,
It looks like you are opening ddraw.dll instead of ddraw.ini which is the one you want.

That might be the case, I just tried opening ddraw.ddl in Notepad and it shows the same bunch of characters. What Darek said - you need to open the other ddraw file.

Well now see this is what I am talking about. I am only trying to download Sfall as the Bear Dude suggested & you guys are talking about opening a file in FO2. I am not opening a file - I am DOWNLOADING.

(Or am I missing/misunderstanding something here?)

Sounds more like you're not even getting to the ddraw.dll/ddraw.ini stage. The .7z file is a compressed archive. You're supposed to unpack it, (with winzip/winrar/7-zip/whatever else you use.)not look at it. (And if that garbage is appearing in your web browser rather than it offering to save the .7z file to disk, then your webbrowser is broken.)

Thx, Timeslip, but it's not my browser. I'm convinced the problem is with Win7. There's some downloads I have no trouble with - while others it seems Win7 can't handle. E.G. - I downloaded ExtractNow from Download.com with no trouble but FreeZip (a very simple little utility also) could not be set up at all. If I go back to XP I have no problem with any of this. XP tells me that Sfall is indeed a 7Z Compressed Archive File & suggets utilities (WinZip, etc.) to handle it.

Win7 in some ways seems very likeable - but in other instances it can make a mountain out of a molehill!

I can get F02 to work after a fashion in Win 7 but not with your Patch & Restoration Project installed. Even so, The color is distorted & travel on the world map zips along at too fast a pace....

This was not mentioned in this thread, but I hope that you are not trying to install both the patch and the restoration at the same time.

For the record, I develop sfall on win7. I'd be in a bit of a pickle if I couldn't run my own programs. :P

It sounds like you don't have an extractor program like winrar, winzip or 7Z installed, (note: if you're new to computers, these programs are not part of win7 - you have to download and install them) if you click on the sfall icon one of these programs will extract the sfall files to whichever folder you like. Also, whichever one of these programs you are using, make sure you go into the program and set it to open all types of files.
I have been running all the fallout games in win7 with no problems. So it sounds like you are missing one of the programs that are needed to extract the files.
Hope you get it running cause it's a great update to the original game, makes it complete.
The only other thing I can think of is that you have a corrupted copy of sfall and need to redownload it.

My first puter was a C64. Later I became acquainted with Win3, Dr Dos, Win 95, etc. In '96(?), I began constructing my own site online doing research & studying how to do so. Now it's quite large. But my life does not revolve around puters though they hold a certain fascination for me. Especially when something seems to work for most others but not me. Life itself can be like that.

I downloaded 7Z & installed it but can't open it up!!! :(
It amazes me that someone else can run all the FO programs ok. FO Tactics runs fine for me. But as I said I'm running FO2 with the RP mod on XP ok so I guess I should be thankful for that & satisfied. Would Sfall add anything to that?

Oh my... Sorry, I don't want to sound rude, but this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Here's what you should do:
1) Download WinRAR (it's easy to use and it can extract .7z files)
2) Install WinRAR
3) Download sfall
4) Right-click on the sfall archive and choose "Extract here"
5) Copy extracted files to your Fallout 2 folder (the one with fallout2.exe)
6) Double click on ddraw.ini file to open it in Notepad
7) Tweak the settings to your liking
8) Enjoy the awesomeness of Fallout 2 in DirectX 9

TY chiquita your patient advice helped. I agree this seems ridiculous especially as this thread only bears my questions. I wonder if it is of use to any others.

I also have figured out some things about Win7 I didn't understand. And Sfall is now apparently installed as FO2 is indeed running as it did before the Sfall installation. Sfall appears on the screen along with the version no. But (sigh!) the color sheme remains as distorted as it was prior to the installation & when I tweak the settings on ddraw.ini I am told "Access Is Denied" when I try to "save." I feel sort of guilty using up so much space here but the "search" facility has never rewarded me with the info I looked for.

I read such good reports about Sfall. I wonder why I am having such a struggle with it. :wall:

Well, good to hear you were able to install it. As for the "Access denied" message - 1) maybe the file's set as Read-only (not likely) or 2) Windows UAC doesn't allow you to modify .ini files, so you may need to turn it off.

I tried turning the UAC off but that didn't seem to affect the situation. But I finally found out how to give myself access by going into "Properties" & then "Security" & then "Edit."

I wonder can the color distortion be corrected?

TY Jansson - the error message for "cities" also showed up but now I have deleted everything & reinstalled FO2 (as suggested by the FAQ) in \Games\Fallout2 & it runs ok (though with that garishly distorted color scheme which I hope somewheres along the line can be corrected).

But there was this post earlier:

"This was not mentioned in this thread, but I hope that you are not trying to install both the patch and the restoration at the same time."

What exactly does this mean? Should the restoration be installed WITHOUT the patch???

If we are talking about killap's unofficial patch, it is included in the restoration project. You don't need to install it separately. Also about the colours:

===============================================
== Black screens/psychedelic colour schemes. ==
===============================================
In ddraw.ini, in the [Graphics] section, change Mode to 4 or 5.

I changed to mode 4 but in starting up the game I received the error message that it is lacking the d3dx9_42.dll & I should either upgrade DirectX on my puter or switch back to mode 0.

My puter has DirectX 11 which is of course the latest version. If I switch back to mode 0 I run into those garish graphics (though of course the game is playable).

I know that others here must have solved this problem as you have done before. Or am I missing something in ddraw?

sometimes the dirrectx version doesnt have all the files from previous versions,run dxwebsetup at microsoft,that will probably fix the problem
