Roleplaying by girls

You know I never asked why she had them or if she had read them, they're just there on her bookshelf.

You should do that, then let us know what she said. Seriously, I'm curious to know, especially since I can't see any female reading these any more than I can see her reading the old John Carter of Mars books by E.R.B.

I've only read a couple, not something I'd willingly do again.

Is that because they read an awful lot like a horny 13 year old's power fantasy? (Which is why I didn't like them, and also why I don't like a lot of the old high fantasy/swords and sorcery stuff.)

If I ever see her again then I'll try and remember, but I did once meet a woman who recomended the JCoM books to me, though I still haven't read them.

because they're awful

Please do. I say we start a betting pool. My bet will be: "Spoils of a previous relationship."

Where do you meet these women?!

BTW, while I wouldn't sit down and re-read the JCoM books, I have to say that I'd love to see a retro-sci-fi game made in that vein. It'd be perfect for a balanced approach since people ran around running each other through w/sabres as well as shooting each other in the eye. Um...too bad the boards would soon be overrun w/munchkins wanting Pancor Jackhammers in the hands of the Green Men of Mars...

Where's the fun in that? Requiem, you should know by now that my default setting is Verbose. :D

Yeah I noticed :)

Back on subject it would be interesting to take a 100 boy and a 100 girl gamers, and give them a choice between Fallout and a comparable fantasy CRPG (if there is one) see who chooses what to play.

I agree, this would be an interesting study, and I would be surprised if it hasn't been done yet.

Someone doing psych or marketing? Here is an interesting test on preferences by gender, and a worthwhile college project.

Most women I've met don't care for RPG's, or video games, period. However, run a Sonic the Hedgehog rom on an emulator and they go apeshit. Shit, I have a flash card for my GBA which I take to work, and all the girls take my GBA away and play Super Mario Bros. on PocketNES when they see me playng.

So, if you want to bond with a chick over video games, my advice is, go for the cute and easy.

1- Elissar you should not be too conceited ;)

2- OTB! Yeah I am Leela. Long time no see! :D

3 - Hum I dont think its just a matter of the game being successfull or just because more women are writing books. I think that when something is good, it will have fans of both sexes. Specially is one sex is not showed in a detrimental way comparing to the other. For example, I love Lord Of the Rings, but women have a minimal role there (this was changed, partially, in the movie version). DO I prefer reading or watching a movie where women have an active role? Sure I do. Do I love watching Viggo fighting ? I do too. Errr...

Back on topic: I think the greatest plague today is "Market". It is a snowball: Genre A sells fine for lack of concurrence. Then more thing in genre A is produced, and if you try to sell anything genre B or C the publishers (or game company or whatever) will think twice.

As for women of unconventional tastes ... Hum, I am quite straight in many matters, but I do like reading and playing many kinds of books and games.

"fans of both sexes", eh?
*Wink wink*

"Women having an active role"?
*Nudge nudge*

"Women of unconventional tastes", eh? Say no more, say no more!

Hum, I am quite straight in many matters

So, do you "go", eh? Eh?

*Wink Wink*
*Nudge Nudge*

Say no more!

I dunno if there's an actual sex-orientation to what type of roleplaying genre people prefer, rather, it's more of difference in interest.

You'd figure that only girls would be inclined towards fantasy, given with unicorns and prancing elves and whatnot (to fall into a stupid stereotype). But I was really into Dungeons and Dragons while it was still 2nd Edition (uh, remember THAC0 anyone?) and I got a hell of a ragging from alot of my friends.

But still, I wouldn't be suprised if the general audience for Fallout (or any post-nuclear game) were males. It may have to do with the fact that, while playing as a female character, you're bound to have sex with nearly everyone (including Carl, the drunk who sits on the street corner all day).

Hell, Ctrl+Alt+Delete is a perfect example of how guys react when they encounter a girl in the gaming environment.

*LOL*

:D

Sure, welsh, that would be interesting. I did both psy and marketing, but those days are long gone. :P

But it usually have something to do with the person's background rather than the fact that you are male or female. A lot of boyfriends introduced their girlfriends to crpgs on this board, and with a little encouragement, most of the girls seem fine with the concept of video game playing. It's easy to buy into the stereotypical view of anything if you have never experience it first hand before. And since girls like to work in groups more than boys because of biological instinct, so if you bring one, then you brought a whole group. That's why sim is such a huge hit among females, because it's something they can do together.

Then there are the Chinese girls I've met in China, couple of them kick my sorry butt in CS relatively easily. 8)

Like I said, it's the background. :D
