Roleplaying via shared world 1-on-1 sessions

First time out of the vault
I'm curious if anyone has ever tried doing 1-on-1 sessions between a single player and a GM with several different players and having them link together. I know sometimes GMs will do a side session with one / a subset of players within a larger campaign framework, but I'm looking more at the idea of characters playing in a shared world: not necessarily directly impacting each other a lot, but still being able to encounter things that are the result of what other players have done (and if sensible having multi-player sessions when/if two characters happen to make it to the same place at the same time.

I felt like this could work interestingly especially in a context of important PCs in a situation of shifting allegiances (could be cool for something like a Song of Ice and Fire game maybe where the characters are leaders or important people among the great houses, just by way of example).

But I'm curious if anyone has tried this before or has any advice. I guess basically it would be a sort of West Marches thing (in terms of largely player directed and players can play whenever they have time) but primarily in a one-on-one context. I feel like it could create interesting scenarios as they're wondering what each other are up to but maybe I'm totally off-base.

It is interesting as an idea. Practicalities are merely the obstacle in arranging all of this. Lot of effort to be put in particularly by the GM to be effectively free whenever his/her players want to be. Besides, party based adventures are usually preferred just because that allows for party interaction, which is one of the major sources of fun. Your idea kinda strips that away. More problems but I'll not be overly harsh.

But there's no harm in trying a hybrid solution where you do individual things with people before bringing the characters together, for instance.
