Romance, Relationships & Sex

Lord 342

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
I had been thinking, since I've been playing Baldur's Gate II lately (I borrowed it from a friend who long ago finished it, as payment for a favor of some sort; it had the "Black Isle" logo on it so I thought it worth a try) that perhaps Fallout 3 should have some more in-depth romances in it. I thought the weddings in Modoc were a laugh, but there was no reason to bring either one along since they were "as deep as the plot to an amateur gay porn" to quote Jimmy Pop; and worthless NPCs. There was the affair with Mrs. Bishop in Fallout 2, which I enjoyed very much, mostly because it was a reference to the movie "Body Heat", but it was a spectacular piece of storyline work.

So, since there has never been anything like this in Fallout before, I figure I'm safe asking. There were plenty of people to sleep with in Fallout 2 especially, and you could even change the gameworld subtly depending on whom you slept with.

I use Baldur's Gate II as an example because it is at hand; but any romances in Fallout 3 would by no means have to follow that paradigm (that is, your love interest is a useful party member). They could be in a location and you come back to visit, or they could start one place, and if you helped them out, they'd move to another (using the Mrs. Bishop relationship as an example, say you tell her to Move On and you later find her in NCR; you sleep with her again and she wishes you luck, telling you you're always welcome, she can't thank you enough for helping her move on, etc.) There could be one "love interest" or a dozen, and they all don't have to work the same way. Fallout had plenty of people to sleep with, but little in the way of a lasting relationship. BGII had three long, drawn-out romances, but few other people to get it on with... As always, I'm hoping for a balance of the two. After all the Fallout world is a Gritty (whoops!) world full of sex, drugs and violence (Fun!), but I do think that love could perhaps find a place in the wasteland... What does anyone think?

Yeah I agree with you. I remember feeling something was lacking on the Mrs. Bishop end. Would have been cool to have hoes in deferent area codes n what not.

Please.

If you want romance, relationships and sex, go play an anime dating sim.

Or better, get yourself a girlfriend.

What Wooz is trying to say is that there are other aspects of the Roleplaying part of Fallout that would benefit more from having more focus on it, then the romance bit. Fallout isn't a romantic Post Apocalyptic roleplaying game, it's a gritty Post Apocalyptic Roleplaying game.

Odin's right, as much as I liked the subtle relationship elements of Fallout/FO2 it isn't necessary, and it isn't what Fallout's all about. If the developers spend more time and focus on the elements of FO3 that we want and need most of all(advanced gameplay, no class system, open ended game design etc. etc.), and ignore the less important things we'll get an incredible game!

+1 Wooz.

Truly supportive on mowing down the romance shit. Miria was fun, but only because of the hilarious wedding scene and the occasion to pimp her around a bit later in the game.

And why aren't you satisfied with Mrs. Bishop? You could've chatted with her, shagged her, knocked her up, extort a priceless Oral...erm, Lingual Enhancer of her... What more do you want - making her exchange the gecko skin skirt for a set of ceramite Enclave panties and run with you arond the Wastes putting down Muties?

I'd rather see some cool mercs like Katja.

Well, Lord 342, ever seduced Raven in Arcanum?

Anyway, there always is Thousand Arms for a romantic (J)RPG.

lol...wow... I think Lord 342 and I were not looking at setting up the game to be like that. Or as wooz suggested a Sims set up. I enjoyed the option. As simple as that, I could talk to a girl like Bishops daughter; sleep with her then take all her valuables while she moaned my name in her sleep. To improve on that it would be cool if there was some sort of a relationship afterwards. As no matter what you did things went south after you left her room.

Never played Arcanum. I've heard mixed things about it. I really wasn't sure what kind of response I'd get with this thread, and perhaps I shouldn't have used the BGII example, but it's all I could think of. I know I wouldn't take Fallout 3 to that level were it up to me; there is something about that model that just doesn't fit Fallout. The thing with Mrs. Bishop was nearly perfect, and I'd basically just like to see more stuff like that. In Fallout, I wouldn't want the bevy of love-interested NPCs like in BGII.

I agree with Silencer, though, that there should've been some worthwhile female NPCs in Fallout 2. Katja was cool, even though she was as useless as any Fallout 1 NPC. The more I think about it, the more I think Baldur's Gate II was a shitty example; people rarely have that kind of relationship; Hell; I don't!

So here's how I'd do it now, with the input from the responses:
I'd have the usual complement of People to sleep with for fun and profit, as in Fallout 2. I see no reason why this couldn't be one of the female NPCs, but I'd keep it at the "just for fun" level. I'd have a couple people like Mrs. Bishop, where you can actually have some influence on their lives and either give them a hand up or use them for personal gain. Absolutely none of the "Sim date" stuff from BGII where the lover follows you around and randomly gets "emotional". Cripes was that a poor example! This will teach me to make posts at 3AM local time!!!

Well, yeah, Raven had a little bit of a Garret-Beaumains-type story to it, the way you won her respect and all.

But... have you ever pissed off Raven consequently?

Actually, Kotario, Raven is what I think a good example of the role of romantic stories in such RPG's - a hint that something may develop, but without emphasis put on it. You could have ignored Raven whatsoever.

In fact given that Fallout's world is more harsh than Arcanums, I think this is the ceiling.

Lord342: Play the game, goddamit! The other day a friend saw it in the store for like five bucks ...

Well, that is why I brought Raven up, though I was hoping that Lord 342 had some experience on that front (for shame!). I feel it is a better romance in a RPG than those found in Baldur's Gate II.

Hmm...don't know if it's just me, but a relationship in a computer game just doesn't do it for me ;)

It's not like I hate it, but it's sort of like watching Swartchenegger in Terminator (don't mind the spelling..you know who I mean!) walking on a beach holding hands with some broad, reading poetry...

Granted, that the game world is the only place where I'd cough up dough for some "hydraulic" action...at this age anyway

Yeah, the ability to fall in love and perhaps have a Family... That would be a nice touch.

As for Sex, I am sure that can be balanced.

I didnt mind the basicness of the relationships in F2. It wasnt a mainstreme part of the game jsut a little thing to do for "fun". I woudnt mind seein this again as it is part of the real world, and infact the worlds oldest profeshipn in prostitution so why take that away from the post-apolyptic world?

(daym not l33t spek makin me check my typing grr)
