Roots and influences

There is a large series of Post-Apocalyptic novels called "Deathlands"; and fallout clearly draws a LOT of influence from these books, especially the overabundance of firearms and the detailed descriptions thereof. The series spans over 100 novels so quoting specific things won't help at all; but suffice it to say one of the key plot elements are a series of prewar bases called "Redouts". The books are fairly predictable but they're plentiful and, of course, entertaining. recommended for all fallout fans. Written by a few people, all under the Pen Name "James Axler".

Syndicate (or Syndicate Wars, which was the name of the add-on as well as the bundle I think) was produced by Bullfrog and has little to do with Fallout. It's apocalyptic in that it has an end-of-days feel, but that's it. It's sci-fi, it's a tactical squad game (with an eco-sim mixed in), it is mission based and it's about organized crime.

Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome game and one of a kind, but it has nothing to do with Fallout. It had a similar POV, but the same is true for most games of that time.

You kidding? I just played that game again a couple of months ago. Same with Crusader 1.

Syndicate, and Syndicate Plus was the expansion...

Syndicate Wars was the sequel, which I wish I had bought back when I could actually find it anywhere... trouble is, I only saw it in one store (ever), and I didn't have any money at the time.

Hm... right... I just found the CD and it reads "Syndicate Plus".

Wasn't there a console title as well? I remember seeing one at the Underdogs.

:: shudder :: consoles...

mmmmmmmmm syndicate wars

i really loved that game

the feel, the atmosphere, the psychotic assholes, the wacky guns

of course you'll need a 200mhz or something to make it work, because i cant get it to work on my current pc with emulators and slowdown thingies... :(

luckily my personal "way back machine" still works. ah the trusty fanless (modded of course) pentium mmx...

i never really played it, i had a 5-min demo that i got on a dos games disk, i just remembered it had a rough, but similar look

A quick search at MobyGames revealed the following:

Syndicate (1993): DOS, SNES, Jaguar, Amiga, Genesis, 3DO
Syndicate: American Revolt (1993): DOS, Amiga
Syndicate Plus (1996): DOS
Syndicate Wars (1996): DOS, PlayStation

Syndicate Plus is the bundle. The add-on is called American Revolt. The sequel, Syndicate Wars, is more action focussed (less strategy/eco-sim, more squad based action) and allows camera rotation (3D?).

Although Home of the Underdogs lists Syndicate Wars as abandonware, the game is available from Amazon.co.uk marketplace (prices ranging from GBP 18.00 to roughly 50.00).

the internet can be a wonderful place

Yeah, but before you jump at it, remember that the concept of Abandonware is not strictly legal (although it is not unethical).

i was talking about how easy it is to find INFORMATION. Games, i like to own, if i want it, i bust my chops to find it on ebay or whathave you.

Good thing you pointed out that you were meaning about "INFORMATION" before people had to guess judging upon the context you used that phrase in.

yeah it's very early 3d with rotating camera & stuff

you get 4 guys (if you can call them that) and you have to go take care of some missions in cities (and places that i wont reveal for people who havent played yet)

definately NOT an eco-sim game. it's got a good portion of squad based strategy and a shitload of action

(since GTA is so damn popular now adays: i think syndicate wars was one of the first games where you could hijack a car and do drive by shootings)

PS: you can completely dope up your squad (either make em completely focussed or make them completely go berserk)

Uh.... I even posted a topic about this. Dr. Strangelove, you can view my opinions there if you want.

I also think there are LOT more other things they have took inspiration from, LOT. That one of the thing that make fallout so unique.

Shouldn't be impressed in any gaming boards, Syndicate is considered a "classic" by most gamers, and, being a good game, is still fondly remembered by anyone that played it even for a short while (like me).

WOW!!! I just noticed something!

Did anyone ever see the movie dark city? If you have you would know that the doctor in the movie is Dr. Schreber. Also the name of the doctor with the K-9 on level 1 of Navarro.
