RPGVault has put up its second sneak peek of indie post-apoc turn-based RPG Age of Decadence. After an always much-loved ribbing and mocking of Vince D. Weller of the gaming industry and all it stands for, we move on to the game's features:
Speaking of armor, in The Age of Decadence, it doesn't increase your chance to avoid attacks. That's what the Dodge and Block skills are for. Armor absorbs the incoming damage when you failed to dodge or block successfully. Light armor absorbs only a few points, but doesn't limit your mobility, manifested in Action Points and Dodge. Heavy armor absorbs quite a lot, but it does limit your mobility, and can even make you easier to hit, so you must consider carefully what your fighting style is, and choose your equipment accordingly. Going for the heaviest armor and the biggest weapon may not be such a good idea.

Here is a brief overview of the combat system:

- It's based on action points. If you have nine AP per turn, for example, you can either attack once with a seven-AP attack, three times with a three-AP attack, or twice with a five-AP plus a four-AP attack. That gives you a huge degree of versatility and control, and adds a tactical element.

- Eight weapon types. Each has its own unique passive trait. Daggers can bypass armor, hammers can knock your opponent down, spears could be used to interrupt your opponents' attacks, and so on. Your success depends on your weapon skills. Getting within striking distance to a spearmaster would be very, very hard.

- Different attack options. Fast, regular, power, four aimed attacks with different properties, and special attacks like whirlwind. Fast attacks cause less damage, cost one AP less, and give you a to-hit bonus. They work great against fast, lightly armored opponents. Power attacks cause a lot more damage, but cost one AP more, and are easier to avoid. They are very effective against slow, heavy armored opponents.
The sneak peek also includes 7 never-before-seen screenshots and an exclusive video of AoD's combat in action. Also, NMA has kept its gallery of AoD screenshots up to date, be sure to take a look at the new UI and combat screenshots.

It's pretty impressive. I do hope they have a combat speed slider for the more boring instances of combat. When you're up against a challenge against a few elite fighters, this pace is fine, but I hate slaughtering rats in slow speed.

Music is great, the game looks impressive. I, again, find myself a bit turned off by the setting, but it's something I can live with.

I can't say I like VDweller's Codex-style approach to PR. The whole "honesty" thing will work well, but the whole "mock the industry!" thing will just confuse non-Codex readers. It's pretty bad PR.

Kinda hard to judge just from this video obviously, but I must say that I think it looks better (from a purely visual standpoint) than I thought it would. I also like the music.

No real complaints here, it looks good and with a fair amount of options as to how you want to attack.

I guess the only thing I can remark on is that I hope there will be a "speed up" option similar to Fallouts. I love turnbased combat, but I do want it to be as smooth an experience as possible. Still, even if there isn't an option like that, it's no biggie at all.

Looks great, hurry up VD!

I need this game.
The graphics look better than what I thought from the screenshots (Not that it matters much to me). While I have to agree that the setting isn't really my bag o' treats, I would really like to play a game similar to the mechanics of Fallout. One last thing: nice targeting cursor.

I think Vault Dweller have been taking the "it will be released when it's done" approach. But he also stated a few months back that if he was forced to release it he could prolly get it in some form of releaseable shape in a months time.

Judging from the topics in the AoD forum over at the Codex, it seems that they're really into polishing the game up at the moment. I think that's a good thing since it's important to have a game that's as nicely presented as possible. It needs to look and feel good, and by that I don't mind shiny.
Just the interface changes they did really seemed to bring the game to another level.

My completely uninformed and useless guess would be that it will be released around Winter/Early Spring 08, but that's just me. :P

Looks very promising for a demo video :)

The project deserves being watched. I've got a bug with the setting, but the gameplay and design on paper seems to really make up for it.

Eagerly waiting for a demo.

Looks very cool, the animations are very good, better than NWN2 imo. The death by spear animation was very impressive.

Agree with the combat needing to be sped up a tad, I noticed he's said that's on the to-do list (as is running in combat). Only other real criticism I have is the textures seem a bit bright, espescially the flesh tones. Could be down to the lighting in torque though.

Regarding the mocking: Probably was a bit ott, but he's made his own soapbox - so all power to him imo. His comments will resonate with anyone disenchanted with RPG's today, not just codexers/nma'ers, and that group appears to be his core audience. Those who get confused by his comments, probably, wouldn't appreciate the game he is making anyway - to be blunt.

Definitely got this marked down as a potential purchase.
