Ruins

The object would be heavily irradiated you realize?

Logically, yes. But in the Fallout world such things are ignored (Nothing you brought out of The Glow was irradiated), and that's why the thing is made to look like it just happened recently, because even the average gamer would probably be able to say "If that's been there for a long time, it's probably irradiated...

I think this is a excellent example of how we could add to the Fallout.

Having a city to explore was one of the things we all missed in the first two games, and its almost a must in any post apocalyptic story.

especially if one of the enemies were big radiated ameba blobs slithering around....dropping on you from broken beams above your head and etc.

I have read a few stories with those ameba-like beings just slowly going around, menacingly, until they manage to grab something , they would then slowly digest it inside themselves while from the outside you could still see the body decomposing....and bones of recent aquisitions.

They were resistant to almost all forms of damage, and their touch was like poison ( make it so that if player gets touched he looses AC little by little until he cannot walk anymore and Ameba gets him)

And there is an excellent short story by Damon Knight called -Four in one- it would be one of the coolest things if that would happen to player...it would so go along with those Ameba creatures....it would be sooo goood believe me.

Go read the story. its really good. im not telling!

well alright...its about small science team that gets on some planet...and main guy goes for scouting with three more. from the crew, ,.... and something happens...he slides of some small rubble onto funny looking piece of green turf and then wakes up inside this gelatinous creature...without his arms, legs, eyes, mouth....

And after a long time, after first rushes of fear and panic he senses that he is not alone inside the being.

Crazy story i tell you.

Imagine that happening to you suddenly in fallout.

And having to reach solution on your own he he.....if you read the story you will see that saving yourself from that would bring you some realy cool revards.... and it would force you to roleplay for a while in a different way believe you me.

I would really like to see what the statue of liberty has under her dress

Probably a big hairy vagina, the french made it, didnt they?

Anyhow, I really like this idea as well, but i'm with Rosh when he says that the key to making this a non-dungeon sort of place is by making a backstory for everything...

You see this sort of thing was done in previous fallouts when you explored the outskirts of the hub

I'm not saying there were *NO* ruins, just not enough. And yes, they need to be more than just XP-grinding dungeons. (Although one or two of those does not come amiss in a game, they get old very quickly. Take for instance the Military Base in Fallout 2. Even though it was optional in the strongest sense, it had a reason to be there. When it has a reason and a story, you get lost in it and forget that you're grinding XP, you want to find out what went on one level down, who worked there, what they did, what happened to them, etc. Idealy you come out of the place thinking "that was cool! Oh, and, wait, I have some stuff and another level too!"

What you guys are describing is entirely plausible, since the major killer is radiation. In the few days after a medium-sized nuclear attack (assuming that nukes only fall on major cities), almost the entire American landmass would be under a radiation cloud. There are only a few places in the country that actually get missed by the cloud, thanks to really lucky wind patterns.

Those places would actually be fascinating to explore; what would a post-nuclear oasis be like?

City trek

Exploring a large city not hit directly in a nuke attack is a very good idea. Instead of a dungeon crawl to get xp, a good approach would be an extremely difficult challenge in order to obtain coveted material (ie. Power armour) for yourself or for your party in order to become independently wealthy. Military bases although have been done in the past would also be acceptable but for only gaining xp and vehicles (APC anyone?).Gaining coveted materials from cities allows you to barter confidently with any Ghoul who has a tree growing out of his head.

hmz, watch what you go gravediggin'. at least make sure your comment is relevant and adds something new :)

due to design, money and items arent hard to come by in FO, so really digging up dirt isnt really useless. finding operable powerarmor in ruins is kinda far fetched, think about it, Ghoullove...

I was just trying to keep the train of thought going on this article( Power armour aside). The ruin cities concept is a great idea and a lot of good storytelling can come from it. Similar to the Planet of the Apes movie where the Humans in New York city mutated into telepathic Illusionists and worshipped the HOLY BOMB. Charleton Heston opened a can of whoop ass on the apes and everyone else in that movie.

A visit to Vault 69 would also be a good idea (if you know what I mean)

Another idea is a city of Ghouls that run a whore house

we had the dodgy mutant/ghoul whore house in tactics, which is unfortunately filled with dodgy toilet humour like that. What merit does your idea have (apart from it being some kind of obsession? ) :P

It keeps with the dark humour of the Fallout series. Picture it! Ghouls running a high price whore house in the subway system of some delapated city. The whore house is a great place to get info, supplies and other things.( if you know what I mean)

As for obsession I do concede a Ghoul fetish.

Who on earth would they service - the only possible punters would be other ghouls - ego there must be another ghoul comunity in the first place. Perhaps its a pointless question asking you, but fetishes aside what human in their right frame of mind would pay good money for a 300 odd heap of rotting flesh and bones?

The women would be regular Humans. The Ghouls would be the pimp daddy action and add a criminal underbelly to the whole thing. Sorry I should have been more clear. I was not talking about Ghoul on Human action or Super Mutants either (Ghouls prefer Ghoul on Ghoul action).

Another idea would be to explore the ruins of VAULT HQ in an American city. A lot of good story opportunity there.

Edit: Vault HQ, where it all began would show you where all of the other Vaults were in the U.S. and Canada (sorry Mexico) and also show the location of enemy Vaults (Russian and Chinese). I think that would be a good start if I was producing Fallout 3. I would even throw in a few whorehouses run by Ghouls.
