S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Lost Alpha

Its been a couple of years since I've thought of Lost Alpha.

As a free game its amazing and if you have any interest in STALKER its a great way to test the waters.

However as a huge STALKER fan there are things I really hate about this interpretation, the focus on vehicles and how many of the maps are adjusted or designed around their use just sucks and takes away from the legendary atmosphere of these games for just an example.

I would highly suggest waiting for a sale, buying STALKER Shadows of Chernobyl, beating that game, then trying this or some of the sequels. You'll have both an appreciation for the changes made in Lost Alpha and you wont have a skewed perspective on what a STALKER game is vs. what this fan project tried to be.

True. Everyone should try the original games first before they judge STALKER. Even Clear Sky is far better than Lost Alpha. At least broken faction war is better than nothing at all.

Lost Alpha? It's free, but it's far from finish. Try as you wish. The maps are good, but the rest... Tbh, LA story is even worse than Fallout 3 story. It's not true to the lore. LA did some small tricks right(the belt ammunition, underground tunnels), but it's lost in the big picture.

You will like Lost Alpha if you love walking simulators.

You're a ray of fucking sunshine aren't ya? Did the LA devs rape your dog or something? Cause that's what I thought might have happened due to all the pathetic vitriol spewing forth from your overactive tap dancing fingers.

You've made your true feelings known about this game here, not much sense in sticking around is there?

There are a lot great walking simulators, like Beginner's Guide, Amnesia, SOMA and Fire Watch. Lost Alpha has a beautiful world to explore, and you spent hours walking back and forth. Some people do enjoy the zone without shooting. Some people don't.

I just don't want to bait people to play Lost Alpha if they only want to kill.

"Walking simulator" is a gross over-simplification of an excellent game.

Are you certain that the majority of people here that have read my post on LA are only interested in "killing things"? I'd love to see your basis for that assumption.

Maybe Fallout 4 would be more your cup of tea? Lots of running and gunning in that.

I think the problem with lost alpha is that they ultimately missed the forest for the trees.

The best example of that I can think of is the vehicles and the way they designed several maps around them.

I didn't work at GSC but I would imagine that at some point they saw that the inclusion of player controlled vehicles and the mechanics used to control them ultimately not worth it, hence why they weren't in the final game. They are by far the worst part of lost alpha, from the roads weirdly blocked off in Garbage to the insanely huge areas demanding vehicle use. They aren't fun and ultimately add nothing to the gunplay or atmosphere to the game, the two things STALKER is best known for now. However now in lost alpha you are generally screwed in a few areas of the map if you chose not to spend the time to care for the vehicle or have it continuously fueled.

Again its really impressive as a modding effort and worth the price of free if you interested in the series but ultimately I think its a far cry from any of the official releases.

Indeed, the vehicle thing was overdone tbh, some quests makes me wish to kill myself because things are really far, and driving is quite a shitty experience.

I tryied walking but its just boring as hell. Game looks amazing though and I kinda like to explore. Shadow of Chernobyl is a better experience overall.

I'm enjoying to play a different stalker game, but it does have its fair shair of bad development decisions. I would say it is worth to play until you get bored of it.

I don't think the atmosphere is bad, its just different, I like the feeling the huge map gives, but it needs better way to navegate, or more interesting things to explore on the way.

The huge map with shit driving + nothing worth exploring kinda breaks the gameplay. Needs some work imo.

I agree that the driving physics are shit in this version but the dev knows about it and will be fixed in the next update.

Thats great News man! Its the biggest problem for me, its what is killing the game here tbh. With this out of the way, game will be like 50% better!

Yeah it's got me stuck actually, stealing the documents from monolith then they go hostile and I have to sprint to the little white car and get away from the attack chopper, it's nigh impossible.

HAhahahah that part is a pain in the ass man, I don't even know how I managed to escape that shitty situation lol. The firefight is amazing, I had a blast killing military and monolith guys but escaping with that car...

I believe you noticed that the car has utterly stupid physics, to handle it without crashing you gotta just tap A and D to turn, if you even DARE to hold A or D for more then 0.5 seconds, the car will roll over. Avoid high speed, seriously, if you are going too fast you are going to die because when the helicopter hits you, your car is thrown away with the bullet impact. You can go pretty slow without getting killed by the helicopter.

To be very honest with you, this part requires a great deal of luck and trial and error. You will end up in another map when running away from the helicopter, a advice: this other map will have some nasty anomalies in the middle of the road, watch out for the crazy anomaly that pull things up then explode them, this anomaly has a very...challenging effect on vehicles lol. Avoid it at all costs, don't even get too close to it heheh

I'm playing on master difficulty btw, perhaps if I toned down the difficulty, this part would be less frustrating. Although I find it rather fun tbh, only the driving part needs some love. This game has great potential, just need some b0lonce.

Oh also, vehicles handle the same when you are offroad, so don't hesitate to get out of the road and into the wild, if you learn how to keep the car moving, going offroad will save your ass from high intensity radiation and anomalies.

When you get good at driving its not so bad, but you can't go at high speed anyways because the physics hates high speed it seems. Its counter intuitive. This helicopter thing for example, I was trying to go fast as fuck because fucking soviet chopper on my back, it was impossible to handle the car.
Then I said "fuck it" to the chopper and I started driving like my grandmother. Turns out that the helicopter has a serious aim problem against vehicles, but its fucking accurate when you are on foot lol.

You know, I really love this game, but I wish to see some serious balancing on its gameplay. I can handle the broken parts because I really enjoy the STALKER universe. Its a shame we lost this series man, so much potential lost here..

I saw the document you posted in the OP mentioning another major update but their last update on MOD DB was in 2014 and every post on their site is at least 6 months old by now. Where did you get that changelist? I'm guessing they are still active on the russian forum or something?

Its been a long while but if I remember correctly the best way I found to run this mission was first to kill all the Monolth members. Then load all their gear on one corpse, then take that corpse to the car and load it up with all the gear, and then do the chase. The Mi-28 triggers when you get into the car after grabbing the documents right? Again its been so long I'm probably mis-remembering. lol

What I do remember was walking back and forth between the cave where the mutated stalkers lived..that sucked so bad every time I had to run it since it took forever.

Changelog has a date on it about 5th line down from the top, last updated 18th April 2016 - it is being worked on, slowly but surely. I'm pretty sure it's like only one or two people working on it.

4th "fix" in the list:
- fixed the handling of white niva vehicle and the model itself

I'm just gonna wait until the new Dev Cut is out so I can start a new game, which will probably have to happen anyway with the new patch.

I saw the recent date on the change-log document, what I meant was where did you get it. I know the link is to their site but I don't see where you got the link form, I don't see anyway to access it other then the link you posted.

Still its good to know a few people at least are still working on it, I know they had some problems with personal after release and that deal with GSC fell through. Orignally I thought they were working on a "Director's Cut" version of the game but I guess those plans have been scaled back since then.

This guy is amazing in my opinion, has a lot of courage to work on such huge project! Wish him the best tbh, this whole project is a great initiative! How does the Lost Alpha community goes? Are there people helping him with gameplay issues?
