S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s assets legitimate?

Online technology tabloid The Inquirer is reporting that the contested art assets in S.T.A.L.K.E.R., claimed to be stolen from other games, are in fact from generic texture packs.

Thanks to reader Rob S. for pointing out that the water textures used by both Valve and GSC GameWorld, the makers of STALKER, come from a texture pack sold by Marlin Studios. The chaps at Marlin make all kinds of exciting textures, including 'Home & Office Furniture - High Detail, Low Price!' and 'Traffic - Low Poly Pretextured Vehicles, SUVs and trucks you can even animate!'. . .

Valve has confirmed that it picked up some textures from Marlin for HL2, and separate sources have discovered that the IMP_Light texture that it was thought could have been pilfered from Doom 3 was, in fact, just a standard Impact Light texture, rather than referring to the Doom 3 monster.
This was a widely predicted scenario when the news of stolen assets first broke.

OH THANK GOD!

I'm so happily looking forward to Stalker for so many reasons that my heart died in my chest hearing about the "stolen assets". I was thinking they'd go under or at least have lots of bad publicity and people thinking "they should have made a cookie cutter game so it'd be faster and they wouldn't of had to steal stuff LOLOLOLOL".

Looks like all is safe and this upcoming RPG is gonna keep going strong.

It sounds believable in essence, but I really doubt the news source. :eyebrow:

The Inqurier has been known to be pushing bullshit throughout their lifetime. They started several false internet rumours, usually on topics that people have a really big voice about; such as Halo 3..

In any case, thanks for the news. :ok:

The Inquirer has broke legitimate news stories before, so there is a fair element of doubt. It might be true or it might not, but I can't discount it out of hand.

yeah! lets start a political debate now!

PS: I never doubt it that STALKER devs were honest hard working people there. But hey! If you are from Eastern Europe, you gotta steal something! fucking envious western shit chewers!

actually they could steal.
GSC was known for some time for providing pirate copies of some games in Ukraine and Russia.

And one more thing that doesn't score 'em honesty points - in Russia they were lobbying through the good reviews for s.t.a.l.k.e.r. They were calling the editors of game-review websites and magazines and offered a press-copy in case editor said that their game will be reviewed as good one.

But... Who knows really..

Damn straight, partner.

Update with the patch, it looks like it had be sent back for more development after the first round of QA. It is now undergoing QA for the second time. The developers are working on a third and forth patch as well.

Excellent news.

Now all they need to do is ensure that the third and fourth patches hose down your savegames so I can re-play STALKER and get the 'real' ending this time.
