Yes, in the home of Catholicism- one finds-

Italian 'Beasts of Satan' jailed
The Italian mastermind of three gruesome "satanic" murders has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
A second member of the cult involved in the murders received a 16-year term, while a third man was acquitted.

The killings, which shocked Italy, were carried out by a heavy metal band calling itself the Beasts of Satan.

The three victims were a woman shot and then buried alive in 2004 and a teenage couple, who were murdered six years earlier.

Andrea Volpe, the leader of the heavy metal group and the main culprit in the murders, has been handed down a longer prison sentence than expected.

His prosecutors had asked for 20 years on the grounds that had cooperated with investigators and shown remorse.

Pietro Guerrieri is to serve the 16-year term.

Could this be widespread in Italy? Or elsewhere in Europe. THe French think so. France outlaws cults. It seems the Europeans are more worried about cults, especially after the Solar Temple Cult Suicides.

Ok, so this is no big deal in America. I grew up in the shadow of the famous 'Say you love Satan!' killing and even dated a girl related to the Defeo murders, famous for the amityville horror.

Of course maybe Long Island is just weird.

But what's the deal with Europe? Are you guys having problems with cults? Doesn't this mean a tighening of rights to free religion (after all if you can't believe in some whacky cult than what's the point of religious freedom?)

What gives?
 
Well, I'm from Italy, and since these killings here it's been a continuos mediatic witch-hunt by tv, radio and papers against metal music, nothing more. I can't say if satanic cults here are "widespread", but I'm more inclined to say: "NO! HELL, NO!"
On the other hand, it's true that Italy has always had a tradition of persecuting secret societies like Masons and others, after all, this country's the cradle of catholicism and fascism, two of the worst things ever to be created by the human race (the third being the corporate system).
And about free religion consider this: if my religion says I'm free to kill you and your girlfriend if I wish to, would you still go around waving the flag of uber-tolerance in respect of my cult? And to be sincere, I don't like religion at all, I think it should be forbidden, along with vivisection and playstaton. Yeah, someone's gotta stop all this madness!
Freedom is an abused word, these days...
 
How dare you speak of an important and respected instution that has brought joy to so many, the playstation had some solid titles.

I think you can put this down to media hype. There are no raging gangs of crazy cultists. Just bat-shit crazy people who would have murdered someone anyway who end up rallying under a banner of some metal theme.

This has gone on everywhere for ages. They'll come up with any excuse to go and kill wantonly. As for the outlawing of cults...now thats just imposing on the freedom of religion. Besides most of the cults are those "suicide cults" that end up killing only themselves. I think Sander has in his signature the quote "Only silly people follow silly advice" and thats a good explanation.

I dont want to turn this into a religious freedom thread, but how can you outlaw a "cult"? Whats the definition?

I mean with a little exaggeration this place and all its members are a "cult".

Actually, the thing about those who are accused of Satanism is that it seems they know little about the religion, and are usually just a little warped.

Most "satanic" killings are really just hoaxes and hysteria.

Most satanic killers are just lone psychopathic nuts.

That said, I remember living in Singapore and the government use to make a big fuss about the "satanism" in rock n'roll.

True Satanists or not, Satanism is still one dumbass cult/religion/whatever.

Its mostly just a worship of self-gratification with a Satanic sticker slapped on to ruffle Christian feathers.


I think back in the 90's there was a Heavy Metal murder in Norway, where one band member killed and ate another one because he topped him on the "evil scale."

These kind of things don't bode well for the state of European Metal.
 
The fun about Satanists is that the majority of them aren't Satanists. They are just dumbasses trying to be anti-Christians.

Satan is a pagan deity that, like all pagan higher beings, became a demon in Christian belief (I'm not sure they even mention Satan in the bible, they just mention Lucifer, who is an ordinary angel that got greedy and kicked out by God).
Devil cults have NIL to do with the pagan belief in Satan, they just worship the Christian devil, who popped up in the Catholic church when the clerics realised you can't convince people as easily that believing in a God who is "beyond good and evil" is good and a purely good super-heroe God with an arch-villain Devil would sell better and was closer to the seperation between good and evil in some pagan beliefs.

The majority of devil cults are harmless because they merely pray to the devil (like other [sic] Christians pray to God) and ask for worldy wealth (which most Christians do as well while praying to God -- spot the irony) which only the devil could give if you follow the tales that God can give you eternal peace in afterlife whereas the devil can only give you wealth in your wordly life but will take your soul in return -- some pagan or neo-pagan cults have a similar deity (yes, I know, Christians usually say God is the only deity in Christian belief because he said so, but the Catholic church later introduced the devil, who by their logic could just as well be called a God, being the arch-nemesis of God and all that) and AFAIK devil worshippers tend to copy a lot from them to make their "religion" look different or more ancient.

However the devil cults that appear on TV are the ones that sacrify blood, flesh and lifes (humans or "just" other animals) or commit rapes -- especially against people who have NOT decided to follow their beliefs and aren't members of their cults (or didn't chose so on their own).
They are apparently widespread, but they are rather small and not representative for "Satanism" (to use it as a loose container term for both, the devil cults and the pagan cults similar to them, just like the media does).

I guess, if I wanted to pray to a deity, I'd chose a more wordly one than the Christian God -- however, as I neither believe in soul nor afterlife, I don't think the Christian devil would be my god of choice.

Maybe it's that metamorphosis from a "God beyond good and evil" to a "purely good God" and an evil devil, that never let me become faithful to Catholicism when I was young, but I think I just like ratio too much to have a neccessity for a god I can pray to.
