Man, not to be a jerk, but seriously, when you say that "the fans" think something, I don't believe you. And it's not that I don't believe you because I live in a vacuum, it's that I don't believe you because I actually read the forums at NMA and DAC.

Can "the fans" stop acting like they have a unified opinion on every aspect of game design? You don't. Really, you do not. Saint Proverbius, Mr Carrot, On the Bounce, Kreegle, Rosh, KillZig, Belenus, Briosafreak, Odin, Ausir, TriCritical, Spazmo, and the dozens of other guys on those sites don't agree on most things. Even on things for which there seems to be a consensus, there is almost always dissention. Unless the topic is something like "Is Fallout spelled with two 'l's or one?", it is highly, highly unlikely that there will be a unified opinion.

And that is perfectly fine. But it becomes really annoying when we're accused of "ignoring the fans" because something is done contrary to the wishes of one hardcore fan. If one person tells me to turn left and the other person tells me to turn right, is it reasonable for one of those two to feel ignored when I actually decide which way to turn?

So can we agree on something? And if we do or not, is that good? What is a Fallout game for the regular fans like us? And can we agree about a few ideas to Fallout3?

There isn't much that "the fans" can agree on, but I'm not sure if that's such a bad thing. What it shows is that diverse people can play the game and enjoy it. There is a downside, though, namely that any designer trying to cobble together FO3 is going to feel like he's walking on eggshells. (Something that J.E.S. is well aware of by now. ;) )

Hey! That bastard mispelled my name!!! (And why does he know my name? Am I that vocal?!)

I think there's a lot of general ideas that most of us could agree on. I don't think we could ever have any unified opinion on details though - there's too many idividuals, and all from different backgrounds and different parts of the world, for us to all agree on specifics. Seeing as how it's been 5 years since Fallout 2 and these sites are still around and very active, I think it would be safe to say that all of us think that Fallout was one of the best games we've ever played, and we want to see Fallout 3 live up to that. Beyond that though, I don't know. Can anyone else think of something?

I posted about it in the IPLY boards, but JE seems to have missed it (Can't blame him though, with all the traffic going through there).

Of course we can't agree on everything, but the fanbase as a whole has issues it sees as important. You will always have people who liked Fallout but doesn't agree with the whole, and that's fine. But that doesn't mean we have no opinion.

Most Fallout fans agree that the game should keep it's setting and not turn into a cyberpunk kind of game. Is that the opinion of the fans? Yes it is. But there was still people in DAC who said Fallout should change it's setting.

What I'm saying is, there ARE a few issues that can be said to be resolved by the fans, and I hope JE cansee what these issues are.

I've got to raise my profile. I want to be considered a hardcore fan with influence.

Nonsense!

If "we, the fans" were to suddenly agree on everything, I'd be scared out of my wits.

How do you think a democracy would work if everyone agreed? Jeesh.

The point of arguing is to disagree. You can get a lot more information from an actual argument with two opposing sides than from some guys sitting around talking about how cool they are for agreeing with one another.

That said, I agree with JE, and I see how he can thus be annoyed by the attitude "we, the fans". "we, the fans" is bull-shit unless we draw up a Fallout Constitution, and I'd be damned if that happens.

Frith.

Yeah.

But seeing as how few times one would see formalized (and easily recognizable) rhetorical phrases like "I concede that point, however" or "my rebuttal is" in either NMA or DAC, it is hard to distill the core of what fans are debating for someone who maybe is not 'plugged-in' to the community.
And even if they are, there is quite a bit of general hostility towards 'company men' trying to corrupt the 'vision of the people.' (Even if that vision has never been concretely expressed by any means.) That makes it harder to understand the general sentiments of the community w/r/t future projects.

These, DAC's, and BIS' boards would be pretty boring if all of you agreed on anything.

Yep, you`re right on that, i once wasted three pages of arguments telling Gronmir that and he wouldn`t believe me, the "homogenous fallout fans" mith is still rampant and it doesn`t go away , no matter the facts are.

Except for FOBOS, that the vast majority screams just at the sound of that name, the views are indeed varied, some more interesting and well thought, others ,er, less well thought, but with five years to discuss we`re bound to have strong views on just about everything on the games.

We need something new to disagree, get that announcement soon

AOF's Gromnir?

Ehehehe, I can remember how, on the old Order's board, Khronos would only post as "Gromnir Doppler". Good times...
