I haven't played SS2 but after the reviews here, I guess I should check it out.

I do remember plenty of moments in RE1 that got my heart pumping, but I was a young teen at the time and already chock full of more hormones than I could handle.

    Noteable moments:

That giant friggin snake busting out of the wall.

The first zombie dog encounter you have in that terribly decorated hallway near the room with the shotgun and trap.

The crow attack when you go to get the bazooka off of your dead buddy on the balcony.

I've been playing through RE4 for the wii lately and it doesn't really have the same vibe to it's scary moments that the first 3 had.

it seems the sheer number of zombies to kill desensitizes you to them after a while.

although the exception to that in RE4 would be the rare chainsaw weilding zombie women.

you never get used to those, and after I found out what happens if you don't keep them pinned to the floor with your shotgun, they've scared me shitless ever since.

    * mild spoiler *
there's nothing like having an inventory full of ammo and healing goods, and having your head whacked off with one swipe of a chainsaw.

SS2 wasn't scary at all, it was just weird, sound effects were good was pretty fun scavanging for ammo and shit though. Didn't play all that much, i guess i got like 50% through SS2 maybe.

I've played alot of "scary games" FEAR,doom 3,condemed, couple older games like dungeon master was scary when i was like 4 years old. Silent hill was just kinda creepy and crappy, clocktower wasn't that scary and the resident evil's wern't scary at all.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R is the only game thats actully put fear into me, i hate blood suckers, i hate them more then anything else. I can take the pseudo giants, controllers and snorks but blood suckers are just a no go for me.
  3. Um, System Shock 2 would be on my list, Followed by Doom 3.

    Lights off with headphones even.

Penumbra was pretty creepy in the beginning. Later in the game I kinda got used to it.

This thread made me give system shock 2 a try last year but it was just impossible to get it to run on my PC. But now that I saw it brought up again recently I gave it another shot this weekend. I spent hours reading forums and installed several patches/fixes and what not and it FINALLY worked. I couldn't believe it.

Anyway, long story short, I finished the game today and wow was it amazing. Incredibly rich and highly engaging, very fun and fulfilling. Apart from the stunning storyline I have to give extra props to the audio aspects of the game (ambient noises, music, characters, and especially the audio logs). This was really a pleasant surprise to me.

Oh and how come all I hear are praises for Shodan? The Many are (is?) a much more interesting and complex antagonist and definilty creepier. How can one resist the call of the Many?

Resident Evil 2 on PS1 when you enter the police station and go to the interrogation room!!
And has it was already been said; Alien vs Predator 1 & 2 when you play the mighty Marine

As for Doom 3 is too predictable; the music and the light change then monster appear! But it's a gore game like Jericho.

For me it was SS2. I played through Resident Evil 2, Pathways Into Darkness, a bunch of others. System Shock 2 though was the only game to make me lean away from my monitor. Really awesome game. It really did a great job of immersing the player in the game's world instead of using cheap scare tactics. Now that takes some real skill.

Also, I really believe System Shock 2 had the best audio for a game to date. I've played a lot of games but none of them really compare to the amount of detail put into the sounds of that game.

Silent Hill wins hands down for creepiest atmosphere, but I think SS2 is probably scariest. First time I played it I deleted it off my computer after about an hour and a half of playing.

The original D, Fatal Frame, and probably Clock Tower 1.

Haunting Ground, Lunacy, RE and Silent Hill all have nice atmospheres.

I just replayed bioshock, and found something strangely frightening. At the point near Andrew Ryan's offices, "play dead" splicers start popping up. Though easily identifiable by the fact that they are clutching their guns, and indeed that i could remember many of their locations, i was still terrified by them. I remember approaching one on a mattress, fully aware of what would happen. For some bizarre reason i still jumped. That joyful laugh as the woman suddenly jerked into life was just overpoweringly shocking, and i have no idea why.

Pokemon for Gameboy. The thrill when I was throwing pokeball at my first pokemon!

Anyway, I tend to avoid scary games. Too pussy for 'em. I guess. But I recall The Suffering had nice atmosphere, and Call of Cthulu (until you get a gun).
