Science!

First time out of the vault
What sorts of high technology would you all like to see added or changed in the game?

Aside from more variability in the types of high end weapons available; I would like to see more remnants of a high technology civlization: like maybe domed structures or destroyed spaceships, more gadgets: like air-conditioned clothing for staying cool, and more knick-knacks that are of absolutely no use but are just for show: like laser cut baseball cards.

I'd like to see that addition of more fun and randomnly added Science! items, rather than the usual armor-gun thing.

The StealthBoy was a good example of this. It should've been tooled up and expanded upon.

Do they still print those adds for stuff like x-ray specs and mermaid people in the back of comics?

Some of the 'improbable' technology like the x-ray specs would be fun.

X-ray goggles would be cool. You could use them to look through walls at people or see inside containers and stuff.

ITEM DESCRIPTION COPY:

You See: X-ray goggles

A Pair of RicoTech Xray-speX. This novelty product was made as a party favor shortly before the war broke out. It allowed the user to see through other people's clothing. Sort of an "ice-breaker". Turned out to be more of a "nose-breaker" from ogling those who didn't want to be ogled... The war ended a series of messy law suits against RicoTech.

With these in your Goggles slot, you can look through thin walls and doors, see inside certain containers, and of course look through people's clothing. Be sure to adjust the intensity if you start seeing bones!

END ITEM DESCRIPTION COPY

They could be used to look through certain walls to get an idea of who or what was inside (even if there will be no fog-of-war, you could see "hidden" people or objects (like Gruthar in Vault 13), if the walls were thin enough. Looking at the right containers with the goggles on would yield a list of what's inside (item names but not descriptions, and nothing you'd need to examine it to know, i.e. a water chip would be a "Circuit Card", just like a red memory module or what ever you please). The ability to see through people's clothing would just load a different graphics set. :) I'm thinking two "undocumented" features for the goggles; 1: a 15% boost to doctor checks made on living beings due to aid in diagnostics if you turn the sensitivity up all the way, and, 2: if some pervert :D walks around with them on all the time, he may learn a few surprising things, i.e. that someone who appears human is really a cyborg, or that someone in an area where no guns are allowed is packing a holdout.

dont forget the possibility that the big mayor of the town for some reason is wearing pantiez!!

Possibly, but I think that for obvious reasons X-ray goggles would not be allowed to be worn in certain places. The Charge-d'affairs or whatever he is woudl probablly tell you to take 'em off before going to look at the mayor... but little backwoods people would probably think they're fancy sunglasses, and some people wouldn't care, or even have different dialog options. (I can imagine Miss Kitty in New Reno having a few priceless ones.)

I don't know whether or not food will become an issue in Fallout, but I do think that the inclusion of space age food products like freeze dried rations would be nicely placed in Fallout.

And on the side of random stuff, I'm thinking like Cosmetic beauty creme that can make you look like someone else temporarily. Maybe some kind of animal you can grow from a pouch (sea monkeys were all the rage back in the day according to my parents): "Just add water" :)

Oh and if they could find some way to make the motion sensor more useful that would be much appreicated by me. I have always loved detection technologies (the x-ray specs are a nice idea), and the motion sensor never really did enough for me.

Don't forget "weird science"! It would be FO without a dash of the whole live-brains-in-jars/brainbots kind of thing. Radiation is a strange and mysterious force after all. :)

I didnt see any problems with the brainbots, I mean they could build vaults and A-bombs that blasted civilization away, so there is nothing strange then with a little robot

I think what they meant to say is that "It wouldn't be FO without a dash of the whole..."

It kind of makes sense, and I have to welcome another Wasteland vet. From the Rangers forum, perhaps?

Thank you for the welcome Roshambo, if you are talking to me
Am not from the Rangers forum, i just recently found this place searching for info on F3

Its really great this place- loads to discuss

Being he resident bioscience nerd, I'd love to have science labs laying around, abandoned, looted and otherwise disused. In them could be lyophilized bacterial and viral samples, free from the ravages of time, that could be used by the knowledgable PC to make antigens, biowarfare agents and generally good and bad shit during before and after combat to alter the outcome of the fight.

Or for instance, make a molotov cocktail, but full of drain cleaner and aluminum shards, as a flash-bang or crude demolition charge.

Distill some fat, and nitric acid, do a dance and create homemade nitroglycerine for a more modern demolition agent.

Hell, concoct your own gunpowder, altering the mixture to suit your sniper rifle or Spas needs.

All of this could be extended into the field of metallurgy, blacksmithing, engineering and electronics too.

If done properly and invested wisely, the science route (whichever you choose) could be a viable alternative to the smash, thief and diplomat options. MacGuyver anyone? The skill points and such to make this class workable would need to be high, thus taking away from the PCs other ability fields, thus weakening them in other areas similar to the way that specializing in the other options (smach eg) would weaken them in other fields (like diplomat).

Of course this would require the dialogue and gameplay be balanced for another entire game resolution methodology, but if Beth is serious about FO3, maybe they'll pursue it.
