Seeking Rly Hard Game

angie

First time out of the vault
I have lust for hard games. Not hard like you just can't do something (like you can't find the hidden key), but hard like you need to develop skill or need to figure something out in order to do something. Really sharp learning curve, but well-made.

Also a game with near-Harry-Potter quality dialog would be nice. But for serious, nothing less than the best.

Examples:

FOT:BOS on Insane and Tough Guy.
Hitman 2
Space Rangers 2
Simon the Sorceror (I...sob...used...hints on this one)
Spellbreaker
Thief with one save per mission
Iter Vehemens Ad Necem

Dialog/Story/Writing:

Sacrifice
Planescape: Torment
Thief: The Dark Project
Spellbreaker
Zork 1
(though I loved Fall1&2, they wouldn't be good enough for this list)

He isn't serious, there, Wooz.

Also, go play Nethack.

Thanks! These suggestions I prize and will implement now. Esp. Robinson, which will "leave masochistic gamers chuckling with joy" according to HOTU.

Mafia is a really good challenge (at least for me it was) and also has a great story and characters. Probably one of the better PC games all round i've played.

God of War 2 in Titan difficult. It's absurd.

Need for Speed Underground, race 72, on hard. It's not absurd, it's IMPOSSIBLE.

American McGee's Alice - pretty tough on the highest difficulty level, and it has a psychedelic twist

Also, a lot of old text adventure games. Like Bureaucracy.

Temple of Elemental Evil, using the in-game Ironman mode. You have to learn the well-crafted system thoroughly, and there is a nasty element of random chance. Not to mention high-risk, low-level D&D can be quite a bit of fun.

You will most likely, if you decided to play ToEE, use the Circle of Eight mods/patches.

Bloodnet. Not taking more than 2 NPC's in your party makes it really tough.

I found soloing Dungeon Siege II a nice challenge too.

Sanitarium is a hard game in it's own right, with a really neat, twisted story.

If you're looking for *hard* adventure games, you should try Amerzone, Faust, Black Dahlia, Zork: Nemesis, Azrael's Tear and Phantasmagoria 2, all really good games with interesting stories.

edit: You should also check out Dark Seed, a fine, fine adventure game that has it's difficulty upped by a whole lot by the use of timed puzzles.

I thank Madbringer, who made excellent recommendations. Sanitarium, Azrael's Tear and Zork: Nemesis are among my most favorite games. Nothing makes me feel quite like the icy lab or The Patch do.

Starship Titanic is exactly what I was looking for. One of those rare games that's such candy you disbelieve your ability to enjoy. Thanks Dirty!

BTW, I'm not this perky IRL. I just add !s online.

Bureaucracy was intensely frustrating and I gave up, which makes me excited as I look forward to trying it again now I'm older.

I tried or beat all those others. Except Mafia, which looks and is reviewed like an orgasmically good game.

This has been very productive. Please give more names if they come to mind!

Arcanum is an amazing game with great dialogue and it can be hard if you play as a technologist.

Devil May Cry 3 for PS2 is an extremely hard game. Usually, I don't think many "hard" games are all that hard but that game is ridiculous. It took me forever to complete two levels and then I just gave up. Never happened before.

Well, if you want impossibly hard, try the 'Inferno' difficulty of EDF 2017, if you somehow get your hands on an Xbox 360.

I have yet to play Arcanum with magic, with which I hear is extremely easy, but I played it unpatched with a technologist and with the sniper rifle I simply cruised through the game with no problem at all.
I hear though that the patch greatly reduces the power of the sniper rifle.

As a return of a favor, I recommend The Daedalus Encounter. It's a sci-fi space mystery game--sort of combines Privateer type story with Star Trek: TNG type.

It breathes cinema, very FMV-intensive. It also brings cinnamon and cool freshness to mind because it reminds me of my favorite Starbucks drink.

It has excellent live acting and writing (for a video game), and unlike other games its old vids are crisp and smooth. They feature breathtaking cinematography and a thousand pretty 3D models. The fact that it's interactive makes an already good movie into an exciting game. It's the realization of all the hopes of the FMV era.

For those of you who are interested, it even contains a crush-worthy asian woman.

EDIT:NO FUCKING WAREZ TALK!!! Don't worry, the copyright holder has no hope of profiting off it ever again.
