Sessler's Soapbox On Fanboyism

God, what a douche. I couldn't listen all the way to the end.

Haven't read every post, but I was under the impression that every Diablo game spawned a new generation of fanboys, since they appeal to young adolescents. Since they're usually 5 years apart or something, you've got a whole new crowd as a target demographic, that probably won't mind a minor change like colour tone.

Besides, that has to be one of the easiest things to mod out of a game, ever. Just change gamma and saturation for every texture, and whatnot. Or set your monitor to sepia, I don't know. Easier than say, changing FP to isometric. As long as the core gameply mechanics are well preserved, there's really nothing to whine about. In this sense, it's not comparable to the massive changes brought about by FO3.

I can live with a more colorful Diablo 3 atmosphere. Sure, Diablo had a kickass atmosphere but at times, the monotony of the color palette actually caused me headaches and nausea. At least Blizzard is intelligent and implemented a highlight key so that you can see the items on the floor.

If there is one thing that I would change from Fallout 1 and 2, is precisely that nagging "feature". There is no easy way to distinguish items on the floor. It took me several playthroughs in Fallout 2 to find out that there is a sledgehammer and a pistol in the Klamath rat caves. I just had to really force myself to find them.

One thing I wouldn't mind in Diablo 3 is the ability of playing on different planes which would alter your surroundings. IE, the Shadow Plane in Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. You could even make it so that your spells work differently on certain planes.

There was a highlight key in D2, maybe D1. I think it was Ctrl.

Don't get why everyone hates on the people who insist on a darker art style though.
I'm guessing part of the reason for a lighter art style is to give it a better overview, make everything clearly visible, which is good for gameplay, but bad for spooky atmosphere. From there it's just a matter of subjective priorities. Why would you go for the throat of the guy who says he'd rather have a more atmospheric game like the first one? I don't get it.

I swear to god I saw RAINBOWS in Diablo III. I am not kidding.

Still... in my opinion, what I didn't like about both Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 is that individual monsters simply suck. In the first Diablo, fighting a horde of skeletons wans't easy to just come in and steamroll. In Diablo 2, being atacked by a crowd is only a big thing if they are:
1- Minions (with a powerful unique comming along. Immune to Physhical damage... while playing with a Barbarian, for example)
2- The goddamned scarabs that are ALWAYS eletricity-enchanted. Double if they're minions and the unique has multi-shot or eletric enchanted. x10 if he was Eletric Enchanted AND Multi-Shot GRAAAARGLGALRALRAAAABLELBLBELBEBELVLEBBLEPBLE!!
3- Simply too ubber (like the Minions of Destruction)

You know what happens when it's raining and the sun is out? That's right, fucking rainbows happen. The fact is we've seen gameplay outdoors during the day and in a relatively well-lit dungeon. Give it some time.
