Sid Meyer's pirates!

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
Ok, just "got" this one, not much to say really, It's almost exactly the same game as the old ones, wich of course, made me thrilled. the graphics are quite good, not in a technical sense, but they have flair and style, the combat animations for example are really cool, to bad there's so few of them.

and on a side-note, it runs semi decently on my Gf2 mx, 256mb pc100m, athlon 1400 mhz... and no loading times! tough the game clearly grows sluggier after awhile playing (if that was due to me extending the "no loading times!" to a period of about 4 straight hours, or because of the way the world grows, i still don't know)

i think they should've made it less childish tbh.
the graphics are more cartoonish than i'd want them to be. the humor is often misplaced imo.

things should also be more intertwined. as is, the game doesnt really feel like you make a big impact on the world (except capturing towns).
go speak to a governor you just put there (by capturing an enemy town) & he will thank you for capturing the town, but he will say exact the generic text as the governor in the next town.
another example of this is a captain of the local guard harrassing the barmaid. if you fight him & win, more people will be willing to join your crew. however, if you recruit the available crew first & then fight him, no one extra will want to join your crew.
small things like this make me think it could be a lot better.

the political aspect of the game is very underexploited. it really doesnt matter at all whome you marry, except for some bogus little statistic (based on beauty). i'd expect that marrying the daughter of the most wealthy & influencial gouvernor in the continent would be more important than to marry some beautiful broad in a city with two houses & a military force of 10 soldiers.

the revenge part of the game is an utter anticlimax (i wont spoil anything, but you'll see). the rescueing of relatives is useless as they do not change anything in the game at all (except you get another accomplished quest, jippie).

some features from the original are missing. as far as i know you cannot attack a town from sea (in the originals you could sail towards the town and try to destroy the fortress protecting the harbor). this leaves only land assaults, which often come down to patience & use of surrounding nature. even here, they seem to have dropped the marches (i've only encountered forrest, open land & rocks).

as for the voiceacting? basically there is none. it's a bunch of mumbles and moans. ok maybe he did not want to use spanish, french, english & dutch, but come on! the texts you get to read during these mumblings are so generic you could easily do em with english actors.
if you use mumblings at least vary the text instead of serving us utter generic crap...
(maybe i'm spoiled on that subject since i just played Vampire: tM - Bloodlines)

dont get me wrong, this is all in all an enjoyable game. however it is nowhere close being listed with the top games of the year, let alone be a classic like the original.
i cant help but feel sorry that this game turned out like this. it had so much potential. hell, not that many changes should be made to make it into a truely wonderful game. (my hopes now rest with the modding community)
Sid Meier obviously missed the mark for me this time.

yes, if you consider getting ass-raped and banned by the mods for talking warez "ironic"

But yeah, it's a fun game that gets old fast...

.

True. Still pirating a game about pirates is indeed ironic...

Pirating a game about pirates... But that would make me a pirate?
But even if i bought the game, i'm still a rotten pirate?
This shit is deep

I also came upon those questions, but it took me awhile to see all the implications of the act.

If you bought the game, perhapse you shouldn't deserve to play it because you're not willing to be a pirate at all.

In that case, I have fully earned my right to play t he game. :D

Is it just me, or are those dancing bits really really hard? I can't even get a governers "plain" daughter. I may be number one pirate, I may have sacked 6 cities, and plundered christ knows how much bling-bling, but I can't get one single woman into bed because I dance like a spaz. Damn shallow women. :(

lol!

just get the boot upgrades & use the numberpad. you should be just fine (well, except if you are playing of the hardest of the hard levels :) then it's just a fucking pain in the arse!)

Yeah, finally got some dancing shoes or whatever. I can do it fine now, even got a beautiful daughter up to romance level. So it's working out fine now. :D

dont forget if you tap the direction key fast twice, you have better chance of making her spin & giggle ;)

Yeah, the dancing part is a bitch, i'm the most feared pirate in the caribbean and can take a ship of the line using a sloop, but fuck me if i can spin around a bit.

So will I, a fan of the original Pirates! and Pirates! Gold be happy with what has been produced or should I pass? I've been skeptical ever since I saw sloops flying around like speedboats, but I'm open to the idea it doesn't suck.

I don't think the game sucks. As a matter of fact I think it's pretty true to the original game. Yeah, the graphics are a bit cartoonish, and they altered and added a few things, but the gameplay is pretty much as I remember it.

Unfortunately that also means that the game is gonna get tedious after a while.
