Sid Meyer's pirates!

Well you've never steered my wrong before Flop. Now, assuming I don't pirate myself a copy, would it be worth the money for it now? Or should I hold off and get it when the prices go down?

So will I, a fan of the original Pirates! and Pirates! Gold be happy with what has been produced or should I pass? I've been skeptical ever since I saw sloops flying around like speedboats, but I'm open to the idea it doesn't suck.

lol & you haven't even seen frigates & ships of the line handle like sloops (aka F1 racing boats)

but by any means try the game. even if i think the game really doesn't reflect the previous ones, it is still rather enjoyable.

I don't think the game sucks. As a matter of fact I think it's pretty true to the original game. Yeah, the graphics are a bit cartoonish, and they altered and added a few things, but the gameplay is pretty much as I remember it.
Unfortunately that also means that the game is gonna get tedious after a while.

tbh i never got bored with the originals, with this one i have. too many anticlimaxes.
you say it's pretty true to the original game? i would beg to differ...

all depends on your cashflow my dear, but i don't think the game will loose anything if you wait a bit.

as for the pirating stuff, my philosophy: leech it, play it & if you like it: buy it ;) (seems only fair)

It really depends on how much money you've got. If you liked the original Pirates! or the gold version, chances are you will like this.

My problem is that I can't play this game for more than 10 hours or so before I lose interest. I did play the other ones for longer than that, but I think that has to do with my standards being higher now than they were back then, and not because this game is not as good as the other two.

Anyway, if you're poor, like me, you'll probably want to wait for the budget release.

That's assuming you wont pirate it, as requested. 8)

You should know me better then that Kotario. Besides, piracy implies theft. You cannot steal something that rightfully belongs to you! The workers of the world have been repressed enough without the greedy bourgeois bosses taking what belongs to them!

Anyways, I'll do what I usually do, and circle like a vulture of the bargain bin wasteland waiting for it to grow too weak to fight back.

Anyone have any tips on how to dance?

The lady you're dancing with will make a hand gesture in the direction that she's going next. Follow that instead of the flashing arrows (which only go off the instant you have to move) and you'll be fine.

Also, a numeric keypad will make things a lot easier. On a sidenote, does anyone know how to reprogram the keys in the game? It's nearly impossible to do well in certain tasks (like dancing) when you're playing on a laptop.

CCR: The mysterious man in the tavern sometimes sells dancing shoes. I'm not sure what exactly they do, but once I obtained them, my dancing skill improved dramatically.

Ancient Oldie: Edit the file KeyMap.ini. It even has a shortcut placed automatically on installation in the Pirates! folder on the start menu.

flashing arrow? lol!

only played on the easiest setting i see (or second easiest). the arrows dont flash on the other difficulty levels...

simply follow the hand & be quick to react.

if you are quick enough and tap the directionkey twice in the right direction you have a better chance of making your partner 360...

i think you can buy 2 pairs of dancing shoes (one simple high boots & one pair of those fucking gh3y slippers). both will allow you to make more mistakes without penalty during dancing...

Right, I don't want to see more warez talk. Enough of this, you all know better.

Secondly, I lub this game. Just got it yesterday and it's like old times, dancing was easy and I still have my uber skills in attacking a ship/swordfighting. Yay!

Only played it for an hour last night and already I was made a colonel, that reminds me to play it more today :D

How much is this game going for at retail ? Im considering getting one more game before leaving for basic.

Bah, the game is very fun, but too easy. In just one day (full day) I became French Duke, Dutch Admiral and English Colonel, looted over 400,000 gold, found all treasures, defeated all pirates but one, found my sister and uncle, got married and generally owned everyone and everything the game threw at me. I play on Adventurer level. I still plan to find my aunt and whatever other relatives remain, and defeat that last pirate.

at all levels except the highest it really is too easy imo.

but the main problem is that you really dont have any motivation to get to the 'endgame'

which is roughly: finding all lost relatives, get revenge, find treasures, kill all notorious pirates, find all lost cities. all for a lil (recycled) scenematic of 10 seconds each...

Sid Meier's Pirates

I picked it up today. I probably won't have time to try it out much until Friday.

Any thoughts from those who have played it?
