Silly Question for a Fallout newbie.

First time out of the vault
REALLY stupid question, but I just bought it, I'm loving it, but I'm curious if it is imparitive to kill EVERYTHING? Specifically the rats; seems like a waste of ammo. I know there are more nasty creatures later in the game, should I keep an itchy trigger finger? Thanks
 
Only if you want the XP but I never really grinded in Fallout.

In my various playthroughs of Fallout I've never killed all the cave rats.

You can also sneak by enemies, even animals.
 
Ammo becomes quite plentiful relatively early into the game, so you shouldn’t worry too much about wasting it, unless you’re sharing with companions.
