Sin City - Reviews

I have to say, from all the signs, he is a hitman (one hired by the people he kills, an easy death). After all, he is credited as "the Salesman," the short story he appears in is "The Customer Is Always Right," and the line "I'll cash her check in the morning" strongly indicates that she hired him.

It also makes sense at the ending, with Becky. She did not have much to look forward to, with the Old Towne girls still around.

It all seems to line up pretty well.

wow. I never thought of it that way. Its a very interesting idea though. I thought he was just a hitman. By cashing her check i thought he meant he will cash the check his employer would give him for killing the woman.

Thats what i think. Certainly its possible that he his hired by the very people he kills, but why wouldnt they just commit suicide? Also to me it didn't look like Becky wanted to die. She looked scared to me. I just assumed it was the girls of oldtown that hired the salesman.

Exactly. The Customer didn't know what was going on, either. Why go to all that trouble and drama if she knew he was just going to shoot her in the gut?

Also, I doubt Becky would hire someone to kill her, or even commit suicide.

I just assumed it was the girls of oldtown that hired the salesman.

That's a reasonable possibility.

Sorry for the grave dig (is it grave digging if the thread is still on the first page?), but this is a pretty cool, sin-city related thingie:

This week's Photoshop Phriday is based on Sin City, and its looking pretty cool. I have to admit, the section has been really lacking during the past couple of months, but this one is very nice.

My fav. one

The facial expression is what does it for me in the second one.

Hopefully I am seeing the movie tomorrow. I hope the story works for it's visuals. I have been reading the comics and so far I can say that it's a good thing that Miller draws well because these stories are kind of stupid.

Really? I thought the opposite. I found the stories to be rather well done, but the drawings rather rough. Miller has a unique style, don't get me wrong, but it always seemed like rather average work that anyone could do. It's just the actual vision of Sin City was great.

I actually think the pictures bring out the pulp look, so the pictures don't bother me much. But in terms of stories themselves- kind of lame and unrealistic and rather abusive of overused cliches. Ok, so this is better than yet another Hulk/Spiderman/Daredevil- comic type. Again, these are just the comics and they are fun reading, but not all that impressive.

Good pulp fiction has been done before, in movies. LA Confidential, Usual Suspects were really cool stories of the pulp fiction genre. But the stories in those were much better, more sophisticated and more interesting. These stories are juvenile.

Ok, so it's got mature adult themes- sex and graphic violence. But the stories are rough and simplistic, not overly compelling.

As comics go, cool. But as fiction goes its pretty poor.

Which goes back to an earlier question- is this a long comic book for adults or a graphic novel. As comic books go, it's pretty good. As novels go, it's pretty weak.

I would say that the stories are compelling because they are so rough and simplistic. It deals with base interests and causes that are easily identifiable to the reader. It presents a struggle or a cause that anybody can get behind. Its a universal appeal.

I just finished That Yellow Bastard, which was kind of fun. A Dame to Kill for was pretty stupid. Both were predictable and more than a bit over-the-top.

Yes, I like the rough, simplistic pulpish feel to them. As for compelling, base interests and causes.... come on. It is cartoon noir, that's all.

Seriously, if you enjoy the genre there are better stories out there. As novels- weak, as cartoons, rather cool.

John, I am hoping there is better graphic fiction out there. I'll read some more Sin City, but it's still just a comic book.

I'm not particularly fond of Sin City either. They can be fun, as is the movie, but it's not literature, and they are not graphic novels.

Read From Hell, Watchmen or Sandman. I would suggest From Hell; despite all the nudity and violence it's the best of the bunch, maybe the best the genre has to offer.
