Small Guns vs Big Guns and Energy Weapons

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
A lot of people agree that small guns is the ideal combat skill to tag at the beginning, unless of course you're making a melee character. What about Big Guns and Energy Weapons? These kinds of weapons don't appear until later on in the game. Yet I hear that later in the game they are much more powerful than small guns and you should switch to one of them at a certain point in the game. Is this true? If so, are small guns still worth using even when you make the switch?

Didn't you ask that question more or less?
I often tag small guns and energy weapons so I have an advantage in the beginning being able to use pistols and rifles more easily, and can then switch to energy weapons later on as soon as they come available. In both Fallout 1 and 2 small guns remain somewhat useful even in the late game. The .223 pistol is a great weapon for when you don't want to waste your microfusion cells, and in Fallout 2 you get the gauss rifle, which is a beast with aimed shots.
