Snippet about FO3 @ NGR Oblivion interview

i got a question... how can they say they are going to make it " as if they had written the first two " if they are just now starting to play it and see how it plays? how do we know what makes it " fallout " in the fans eyes is going to be the same thing that they enjoy?

im still waiting for the answer to my question Mr Hines.

turn-based or real-time.

thats all i need to know weather or not im going to buy it.

I don't see what's "good" about this. He's promised nothing; this is just what they might say if they have some nasty surprises in store.
That was my first thought as well. They know the large majority of the Fallout community is after their blood. Announcing that the game will use an isometric perspective or something close to it will take a lot of that anger and hate away. So why not just say it? Perhaps because Bethesda is planning to do what they do best: making first person RPG's.

Beth might think that if they show off the flashy graphics FO3 will undoubtedly have, together with that dreaded announcement, the fans will be less displeased.

Ah well, it won't be the end of the world if things go this way. Perspective isn't even the most important issue for me. I just hope the atmosphere survives. And of course turn-based combat.

Hell, if worst comes to worst, we can still pretend the game never existed.

If Fallout 3 has to bite the bullet, at least we'll still have Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.

One out of three games a total failure you'll want to erase from your memory? I can live with that.

Wait...

I just got the darndest deja vu. As if I had experienced this exact same thought before. Twice.

I guess we have to get used to this PR bullshit cause we are going to hear the exact same things over and over again for one more year.It 'd be funny though,if,when the real details are revealed, all those statements turn out to be overhyped lies.

Or even more times, given those who have played Wasteland before and whom could actually understand why the inside flap has "Remember Wasteland?" on it. (Which I doubt any of the Bethesda developers have, it's more like a mad scramble to hit EB to buy a double-jewel case to pass around the office to figure out what the fans are talking about. Just like Chuck. And MicroForté.)

So we can just consider it to be another Fountain of Dreams, though I consider Fallout 2 to be worthy of that "title", given the general cluelessness of both development teams behind each title.

Another developer who is interested in making a real CRPG and in the post-apocalyptic setting will likely make a "Remember Fallout?" in the future. We just have to wait for the industry and general audience to get sick of Bethesda's and BioWare's apathetic bullshit and trend-chasing, much as the Fallout alumni were getting a bit tired of the stagnation and mislabeling of the CRPG genre in the mid-90's. I figure, as it's about once a decade that a good post-apocalyptic CRPG comes out despite every lame and failed attempt to cheaply cash in on the design of good CRPGs in the past, that we are soon due for someone to get sick of the industry enough to make a game that will make other designers sit up and take notice.

Not all developers and designers are cheap trend-chasing whores.
Which is why I don't completely despise the state of the industry. There's soon going to be enough bullshit that someone is going to get sick of it and make something that stands out because it ISN'T trend-chasing crap.

I'm counting on it, in fact, as we've been fed this bullshit before by people obviously more talented at doing their job in PR, but the lies are still ferreted out long before the game goes gold. People wanted to see how FOT turned out, so that created the highest number of pre-orders from the Interplay store. Once a week went by and people could post each and every detail why the game was shit compared to Fallout or the other games the developers wanted to bill it as, many people CANCELLED their orders (since some didn't ship as promised) and the sales took a nosedive. Kind of like Sacrifice.

So if they turn into blatant lies, we can report that they are con men like Chuck. No big deal. At least we value our integrity and honesty, even if they can't say the same about themselves. :D
