So how did Fallout New Vegas become so popular?

TheHouseAlwaysWins

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
I became a Fallout fan in 2015 or so, but I remember when people talked about Fallout it was about Fallout 3.

However, it seems everybody loves Fallout New Vegas even irl so what changed of it?

You probably just got more involved in the community. More casual gamers, at least the ones that I've talked to, prefer Fallout 3, but in general the Fallout community prefers Fallout NV.

The older the fans of Fallout 3 get, the more they are likely to change their minds and start preferring Fallout New Vegas. I have seen it happening innumerable times over the years.

Then you get tired of them both and play the originals.
I am reaching a point I am getting tired of the originals, to be honest. I have been playing them since release and play Fallout every second year and Fallout 2 every year... I am getting quite burned out. I have to spend a couple years without playing the originals or something.

New Vegas is the best game in the series, hands-down. And I'm not just saying that cos it was my first Fallout.

Playing the originals made me realize how much closer New Vegas is to the originals compared to Fallout 3 and 4. At least in terms of story, tone, writing and morality.

The only problem I have is the crash prone engine. It is likely exacerbated by my shit PC.

Fallout 3? I didn't know it existed. What game is that?

Seriously, people. It is quite annoying to see you discuss bethesda games in the Fallout section. Short from getting rid of the so called 3 and 4 games sections, which would be for the best, then would you at least talk about them in their sections? Or in the general gaming?

You sure you don't secretly love these games? You speak of them all the time and know them like if you had been playing the hell out of them. Were I naturally suspicious of my fellow mankind, I would think you even dropped your pants all the way down and payed bethesda for these games.

I have a pretty crummy laptop and New Vegas only crashed twice in around 250 to 300 hours. The Ultimate Edition is actually pretty stable on my laptop.

Fallout 3 on the other hand, jesus. Heard horror stories of people going to great lengths to make it work in Windows 10 and current machines.

No, I mean with mods. I can't play the game without them at this point.

I have both Fallout 3 and New Vegas running stably on this machine, I don't get crashes with either of them at this point unless I'm using a sprint mod or a purge cell buffer mod.

Almost like watching a beloved franchise get turned into Munchkin trash would aggrivate people or something. Whoda thunk?

I think it gained popularity after it was exposed for a while, they discovered how deep the mechanics and lore roots were. People at the time were hoping for a Fallout 4 after Fallout 3 but were presented with an odd middle ground game made by an old game studio that originally made Fallout back in the day. Most people involved with the franchise at this point in time probably hadn't played Fallout 1 or 2 this was also a peak in the popularity of the franchise so saw huge numbers of first timers being introduced to the Fallout world.

There are two kinds of people who like New Vegas:

Those who TRULY LIKE IT and those WHO LIKE IT just because of others.

Lol look at the herd mentality.

It doesnt take a genius.

Short answer: Retrospect.

Longer answer: A combination of retrospective analysis on an older work, the general perception of an inferior entry to the franchise leading to said retrospective, change in terms of perception through maturation of the players etc.

Plus the 'herd mentality' excuse people tout as why NV is so regarded doesn't hold up that often to scrutiny (even if people do follow that mentality un-ironically at times) as retrospect applies to many players. Many NV fans I've seen tend to be able to express why they loved the game and what they love can and has been shared by other fans/players.

I didn't even need retrospect to enjoy New Vegas. Just replaying the game after not playing for years and not remembering most of it made me appreciate all the stuff it did so well.

New Vegas recently replaced Half-Life as my long-time favorite game (Fallout taking its place as my all-time favorite series). Maybe it’s because I’m 27 but triple-A fatigue has led me to embrace the classic Fallouts and I’m currently going though #1. I keep breaking NV with mods so it’s nice to have a game that runs nicely no matter what. I was raised on DOOM so I didn’t appreciate turn-based games as a kid (minus some exceptions like Advance Wars). I’ve always had respect for the original games since learning about the series in 2007, despite them not being for me at the time. It’s a bitter-sweet reason for embracing a new game.
